I usually mount the U.S. flag on our starboard VHS antenna, about half way up. I mount the Canadian flag on the bow mast (we don't have a stern mast). Whether this is "correct" or not, I don't know. But my intention is to show respect, so...
Also, whether it's the proper ratio I have no idea. I simply purchased it thru Defender.com years ago. I doubt it is, however.

Those that insist on flying flags, or burgees from their radio antennas
should refrain from using those cute little metal clips.
Placing a metal clip around your antenna is effectively, "De Tuning it"
from the factory specs that it was designed for.  |

First, I don't advocate using any metal clips on an antenna--I use Dacron fine braided rope. Another way to do the flag on the antenna, is to slip a piece of thin wall PVCP pipe over the antenna--and tie the flag to the pipe.
As to detuning the antenna: I am not so sure about that. I have never used the metal, so have never tested that. We are going to be testing some antennas at the Hontoon gathering--and I'll put a few metal bands around the antennas to check. We can check the SWR at each frequency--and see if there is any shift--my bet is that there is no effect.
Do you have any specific information or study, which shows that a couple of small metal rings cause the antenna to detune?

I was speaking from memory. I'll have to see if I can find my old manual on antenna designs and tuning. As I remember it had to do with tuning. Watching the SWR meter as you slide a 1" metal half cylinder up and down near the tip of the antenna. When the SWR was correct, you taped the cylinder to the antenna in that position. |

Jack,
There are "sliding ring" antennas, however those have a contact point with a base coil. By making a balum or choke with feed line, you can change the tuning in some antennas. However since the coax is not part of the radiating antenna, any affect had in the VHF range would be minimal.
My Morad VHF . antenna has a whip which can be adjusted--same with the Shakespeare base loaded whips. Most of the fiberglass encased antennas cannot be tuned once assembled. Be great if sliding a cylinder of metal up and down, would tune those--which arrive with a high SWR.... |

| When attaching a courtesy flag to the antenna, I would use a couple tie-wraps: one snug around the antenna to keep the one above it from sliding down; on the second tie-wrap, it would go through the grommet on the flag. Never had an issue with it moving up or down. On the lower grommet, just reverse the process, with the "blocking" tie-wrap on the bottom. |
