Do all C-Dorys have their names in the same place on the side below the windows? I know the majority do. We're renaming our (new to us) 2008 Venture 23 and the side is already kinda busy with C-Dory brand name, the antenna and running lights.

I have short two word (10 letters) name in mind...

Does anybody use the transom anymore? The side below the stripe, or on the stripe? Maybe outside of the forward berth? I'd like to see some examples of different name placements if anybody has dared to be different. Also port of call name placement. Is this stuff regulated?

Pictures please!

Thanks!

The side of the boat provides the largest open space to put the name. It is easily visible, but you have to put it on both sides. The problem with the transom is that the outboard(s) block the view of the name (and the space is smaller). You can put the name on the transom away from the motors (on the side), but the space is even smaller.

My boat has the name on the sides and on the transom (w/home port).

The only place you cannot put the name (unless documented) is on the bow each side. That is reserved for state registration lettering.

If you document the boat--then the name can go on the bow.

Transoms on the C Dory are pretty cluttered with motors, swim steps, kickers etc. But you can put it on the transom if you wish.

On my Tom Cat, documented vessel:

Our current C Dory 25, state registered: you can see the hailing port on the hull in gold on the aft--as on the 255.

You can put it on the eye brow, or back of the cabin if you wish--or none at all.

Generally I like to have the name/logo where it is visible for other boats. We boat on waterways, with commercial traffic. It helps to have the name visible so when you are talking to a tug and tow, or lock master, they can see the boat and name.

We have ours high enough to be seen from far enough away that someone could call us if needed.

AS mentioned, you can put it wherever you want to, but also as mentioned, the purpose of the name (other than to feed your own ego) is so that other vessels can use it for identification and communication. That boils down to a couple of things. It needs to be visible and readable. (And for radio purposes, say-able and understandable.)

Most C-Dorys use the space below the side windows. I did. My boat name is short enough it could have gone just forward of the nav lights on the dog house step, but that would have made it harder to read from abeam and aft of. On the other hand, with it on the side I have to be very careful when walking the deck, to be sure and not scuff the sides where the name is.

It makes the name much easier to read if the font is somewhat plain, and a good contrast to the background color and large enough to read from 100 yards or better.

It is an easy process and fun too. Enjoy.

My problem is that the previous owner stuck his FM antenna right in the middle of the side where everybody places the name. Their 5 letter name was crammed in front of it but my 10 letter name won't fit in the 28" space in front of the antenna and behind the light. As I said, that side is pretty busy already. Thus looking for pictures of alternate locations. Might have to split my name with antenna in the middle.

Thanks for the support! See you at Hontoon Island! More pictures!

kind regards,
John

FM antenna can go anywhere, including inside of the boat--where most of mine have been, Can you move the FM antenna, and fill the hole/holes, and use the name to cover where that hole was?

As Harvey mentions the name needs to be readable, I had my graphics done at a local shop--and my first thought when I got them, that the name was too large a font. But after having used it for 9 months--it was not too large at all. Plus the logo also makes a quick recognization of which boat it is, when you are in a group of C Dorys. No binoculars necessary.

Too much work. Since the new name is two (2) words I may just Let the antenna sit in between them... I still think the raised sides of the berth is a possibility though I have yet to see or hear of that placement on a Dory.

Love the feedback!

If I had thought about it I could have done the same with the split between the "y" and the "C" around the nav light. It would have worked. It could work for you too.
