2019, Some Things to Look Forward To

Some things I am looking forward to in 2019


Here are a few of the things I would list for the new year.

1. More boat time.
2. Always having water room below the prop and the bottom.
3. Never “having to” call “Mayday” or use emergency procedures.
4. Practicing a “Mayday” call, and doing emergency procedures.
5. Doing something different than usual on the water, (shut everything off and drift in the tide, or volunteer for a service oriented project.)
6. Having a special, “Ah ha” moment on the boat.
7. Introducing someone else to a D-Dory.
8. Perfecting a new skill, (throwing a PFD cushion at a target, setting a “Go To” waypoint from the Lat Long numbers, or Triangulating a position via compass headings).
9. Doing a “Buddy Boat” trip with someone for at least one overnight anchorage.
10. A totally safe, no screw ups boating year.

In a conversation yesterday with a new C-BRAT we discussed some of the advantages of a C-Dory. One was the economical use and enjoyment that gives. If your boat costs so much that you are constantly concerned about your fuel burn, or if it costs too much to use for enjoyment, what then, is the point of having that boat. Seems counterproductive when you consider that it is really a “recreational boat”.

Thank you Harvey for the reminder of how fortunate we are to be able to do all of the things we do with these very versatile boats.

To add to your list is "boater home" camping on the road. Also attending the great C Brat gatherings.

One thing I really hate are balloons on the water. We find them all the time. The one thing I like about them is it gives me the opportunity to practice man overboard drills. Merry goes on deck while pulling the boat as close to the balloons as possible without bumping them or making a wake. I stop the boat when the balloons are right under Merry's outstretched hands.

I have a MOB throw kit like those used for whitewater kayaking. It is convenient and small, but they aren't exactly what is needed for a boat cockpit. My New Year's project is to modify mine so that it is always ready for instant deployment.

Your project of triangulating a position brought back memories of one of my first boats. It had a "Hansen Handy Bearing Board" mounted on the helm so that you could take a bearing on an aid to navigation, check the compass, and immediately plot the sight line on the chart. As to MOB drills, Balloons are one of my favorites too. Twice I have been tricked by the color, thinking it was a PFD.

Some add-ons that are for sure.

11. Get my Fell Marine MOB+ mounted and active. (Looking forward to having this device working).
12. ReArm my inflatable PFD's. (4) and a Mustang Throw Stick.
13. Take my Brother-in-law for an extended, anchor out trip.
14. Check my post s for spelling correctness BEFORE I hit "submit" -- See item #7, "D-Dory -- whoops.

Looking forward to retirement and hoping for more boat time in 2019. Canvass guy just called to let me know my new camper top is ready. Will pick it up Saturday. Amazing job done - makes it look like a new boat. Can't wait to try it - all winter I will be like a kid with a new toy that needs batteries but can't get them till spring!

Harvey, I thought that D Dory thing was some new fangled boat I hadn't heard about.
