My reliable weather watcher and C-pal tells me NOAA is reporting Storm Warnings in the San Juans. 45 knot winds gusting to 60!
What a contrast to the many serene cruises Brats have enjoyed there. Mother Nature continues to serve up a quite an atmospheric potpourri. I believe I'll stay home today.

Same winds here in SW Florida today and tomorrow but better temps (65-70) than the San Juans.

The Punta Gorda Christmas Boat Parade is Saturday night. Hope it calms down by then but should be a bit chilly- 45 overnight.

A sad boating day here today on Guelph Lake. A very experienced ice boater lost her life when her boat went through the ice.

Earlier in the week a marina fire in Simcoe claimed 6 boats(total loss) and 4 more damaged. In excess of a million dollars lost.

Our pier in White Rock B.C. was almost cut in half by sailboats that came loose smashing into it. They had to rescue one person from end of the pier by helicopter .

Check Global News video "White Rock Pier"
(I don't know how to do the link)

Pretty crazy here!

I'm a skier living near Anacortes, so I ski at Mt Baker. I checked conditions there today and saw a gauge recorded max wind of 77 MPH!

Some say there is never a bad day boating but I have to admit I am glad my
C Dory was parked in my driveway today! My boys are members of the Co-op sail club that lost all their boats today. At least no lives were lost!
( I am not sure but I think the wharf where the boats were tied gave out because it used to run parallel to the rock jetty)

Is this the same system that was producing 30 foot waves in the Bay Area (Ca.) ?

I think the big CA waves were from last Friday's big blow. We lost power for 3 1/2 days from that one, and held our breath through this last one. Thankfully, only a couple really short interruptions from this one.

Yesterday, Thursday (12/20) I drove along Hood Canal on 101. The Hood Canal bridge was closed to traffic for about 6 hours due to winds over 40 mph. Traffic on 101 was stopped twice. Power lined down over the road, (1 hour there and at least a mile of traffic backed up), and then another stop for a tree down, nearly another hour. Winds from the south on the water, white caps and waves 4-5 feet. Glad I was on 4 wheels this trip. KOMO reported winds on Lummi Island of 70mph and from their weather station on Baker at 112.

In case anyone is interested here is a link to a newly posted video of the boats smashing into the White Rock Pier cutting it in half

The video was posted by someone who was on the pier just before the collapse. Scary stuff!

No boating here today:

"WINTER STORM WARNING
ISSUED: 2:37 AM JAN. 29, 2019 – NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON EST THURSDAY...

* WHAT...Accumulating snow and blowing snow expected. Total snow
accumulations of 5 to 10 inches are expected through Thursday
morning, with locally higher amounts possible.

* WHERE...Portions of Northern Lower Michigan.

* WHEN...Until noon EST Thursday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Plan on difficult travel conditions.
Increasing wind speeds through the day, ranging between 25 to 35
mph will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow. Cold wind
chills as low as 30 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed
skin in as little as 30 minutes.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Storm Warning for snow and blowing snow means severe
winter weather conditions will make travel very hazardous or
impossible. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food
and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency."

Aye.

C Val, Thanks for posting--what a story as it unfolds by the photographer. Be sure and watch the video to its end. Very much like what we see to piers and boats in our Gulf Coast Hurricanes--but compressed in time.
