At this time, we’re ground zero for Hurricane Florence, here in Oak Island NC. Our house is 200 yards from the beach. We are heading to our long anticipated European River Cruise on Wednesday, with the storm expected on Friday.

Our boat is on the trailer in front of the house. Like I said, wish us luck

I think I would move the boat and trailer to higher ground, hop on the plane for your European vacation and don't watch the news until you get back- to what?

I think so too, but with the limited availability and length of stay, we’re really limited. Plus I don’t want it out there for every Tom, Dick and Harry to vandalize or steal

We moved it when Hurricane Matthew came ashore 5 miles away from us with limited real impact on us at the house, but it tore up our dunes, we just got them restored last spring.

But... Matthew was a 1-2, this could be a 4...whole different ballgame. What the heck, that’s why we have insurance

We’ve done everything we could, and will stay tuned while we enjoy our 40th anniversary

Ferg, definitely wishing you all the luck I can muster. We have been there. We were away from home when Hurricane Dolly hit. We had our C-Dory in indoor storage, inland. The weather weasels were predicting a "weak Category 1;" Dolly blew in and sat right over our small community as a strong Category 2.

Had the boat been at our house, there would have been significant damage. Indoor storage, away from the coast made a big difference. Yes, that is why we have insurance, but they don't pay you for the time, sweat, and frustration of dealing with repairs.

Just tossing that out there, but I would imagine at this point that indoor storage inland from you is at a big premium right now.

Looking at the activity in the Atlantic right now, there are more coming.

Batten everything down; stake down the boat/trailer (we have tie downs in the concrete if we have to leave anything behind); put down the hurricane shutters if you have them; put important papers in a safe place... then do your best to enjoy your time away.

Hoping for the best for you - it can happen: we had one that was supposed to put us on "the dirty side," and it fizzled out, moved north, and left us on the dry side with no issue. Once.

Good luck,
Jim

Good luck!

We got hit hard by Hurricane Charley in Florida

From Edisto Island, SC news

A significant possibility, the two high pressure systems may force Florence north as it slows down. It could also be attracted by the low in the upper Atlantic. There is a slight possibility that it might not make landfall if this happens. It is still going to be a major storm. But as it strengthens it might tighten up and be a smaller more intense storm. We will have answers on Tuesday.

I've mostly been monitoring Isaac as i'm in the Gulf. Our meteorologists are predicting landfall as a cat 3 just north of you. Some models put it closer to Jacksonville.

Good luck, you guys will be in our thoughts. We have been watching this one closely as well. What we've learned about hurricanes the last couple of years is the early models are never right, and you can count on the predictions to change all the way up until the last minute. At this point it looks like we are in the clear in Savannah but you just never know until the last couple of days. Lets hope this thing makes a turn and heads back out to sea before making land fall.

From the Washington Post:

"Hurricane Florence strengthens to a Category 3 storm on its path to the East Coast; evacuation orders begin in North Carolina.

The National Hurricane Center said the storm is rapidly intensifying and is now a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 115 mph. The storm is expected to reach strong Category 4 strength before making landfall in the Southeast or Mid-Atlantic on Thursday night."

Yikes!

Is there any way you can do the trip later w/o losing your deposits, etc?

Good Luck!

I’d put off the trip if I could, at this point I’d be out $18k.

If I could, I’d come out to your neck of the woods, and spend the time with our friends in Whitmore

Ferg-

Sounds like you're committed. Tough choice.

If you should elect to come out here, bring a gas mask, we've had 230,000 acres (500 square miles) of forest fires burn in Shasta County alone in the last month, and they're still not all under control or out.

Would love to have some the rain the Atlantic Coast is going to get from hurricane Florence w/o the destructive winds or tidal surge.

Good Luck, and enjoy the cruise(!)

Every linear mile of wetland or upland can attenuate storm surge by was much as eight feet, all other things being equal...plus a wind reduction as well. There is no place further inland you can leave your boat? Even a few miles could make all the difference.

Ferg: I'm sorry man. THIS IS AWFUL. I have been following the storm since last week and didn't wanna post too prematurely because the tracks of these monsters are always uncertain.

Well, now it's pretty certain. Looks like a real bummer. Just remember that belongings and assets can be replaced.

Ughhhh....
