Hey Dwight, Are you taking the Tsawwassen ferry on the oversize discount schedule? And, how about a route and road report. Are you launching at Port Alice? On my way back from Telegraph Cove I overnighted just below CR Storage. Great place to park, quiet ontil 0730, and the perfect sloop to drain and dry the boat.
Have a great trip, stay safe and do catching
Harvey

Quatsino looks fairly wide open for fishing this year. I was just looking at Kyuquot Sound in preparation for going up there in a few days and the BC fishing closures are all over the place. Huge areas closed to "fin fish" i.e. fish. Some salmon "no retention" areas. Rockfish closures here and there, but basically in all the remote backwater areas, which is where I generally catch my dinner and spend the night.
Navigating through the maze of islets will be easy in comparison to determining whether fishing (and for what) is allowed there.

Weather looks like it's going to be pretty nice for the trip. Wednesday and Thursday the ocean is going to be really flat outside Quatsino Sound, but it's going to be a little windy.
Looking forward to the reports. _________________ Rick & Shirley

Looks like some good groceries. Are those yelloweye rockfish in that third pic?
What was your total take home for the trip? I'm debating visiting Winter Harbor vice Nootka one year. |

C-Dog - my boat concentrated on Springs and Silvers - we limited there. The other 19 concentrated on bottom fish. They came very close to limiting on bottom.
Silvers were very big this year, the Springs were on the small side.
The 16 did well with all finfish.
Those were Vermillion. Yellow Eye and Boccacio are now closed (probably forever) |

Thanks for the info.
We noticed, too, that the Coho were big this year. Considering the eggs of the hens were pretty undeveloped, they were probably gonna grow another 4 or 5 pounds before maturing, so they're gonna be really big when they get to the terminal fishery.
On average, the Springs around Nootka were smaller, too. There were a few in the upper 20s, and only one in the 30s that I heard of; most were in the mid to high teens.
I wish we'd found more bottom fish, maybe Winter Harbor is a better bet for that. |
