For those of you planning to do this trip (one I'd love to do) here is a link to the free US Government charts: USA Inland EN Charts. They will run on a PC with OpenCpn and, I assume, commercial plotters.

Will this work with just an Ipad? or do you need a mac also ? I could not sign in with ipad at all would not accept my user name or password ? So hopefully someone has tried with an ipad and can enlighten me on how it works . Usually i have to pray to the Apple gods and a few good words and can figure it out ? Jim |

Well, you could be asking one of several questions. So, I'll show my ignorance and answer those I think of.
1. If you're asking if OpenCpn can run on an Ipad the answer is probably NO. It will run on an MAC (free) or an Android tablet (not free.)
2. If you're asking if an Ipad can download the river maps, well YES. They are only digital files and I haven't found a tablet that can't. Unfortunately, I've never used an Ipad, so find your grandson.
3. If you're asking if there is a navigation program that will run on your Ipad, I don't know but others will chime in.
4. If you're asking something totally unrelated, I pass and apologize.

Jim,
I cannot answer about downloading them to an I pad. I believe that they will run on I Navix, and Max Sea Marine navigation. I have the Navoinics charts, as well as Aqua Map USA, I also have the free version of SEAiq, but it is clunky, and I don't use it. The Aqua Map, and no longer updated Garmin Blue Chart app have both the charts and a tie e captain information. The Navionics app, the Aqua Map and Blue Charts all act as chart plotters and the charts are as good as the corp.
I also printed out the charts for the Cumberland, in the part we are traversing. I already have the Tennessee $15 nice laminated chart book...I like to have paper back up.
I have RayMarine chart plotters on the C Dory 25, and both of those have Navionics chips which include the entire system of inland rivers and lakes, as well as coastal. Also both of the chart plotters will replicate what is on the chart plotter on the I pad via wifi (including radar, sonar and navigation--plus one can control the chart plotter/MFD from the iPad. |

If I was just going for one, I would say Aqua Map. It is cheap, has both raster and vector scans of the charts and up to date Active Captain.
For the chart detail, Navionics. But its a river--Navionics claims to make 2000 corrections a day to their charts...but that is world wide, and I doubt that few are made on the rivers... |

You should be able to go to settings and turn on Active Captain. An account or sign in is only if you want to make posts on Active Captain (change information, update information or put in new information.) Garmin says that they have "resolved" the sign in for Active Captain--I have not confirmed that.
Aqua Map, you need to upload the "Tiles" to your device. The charts I have take up 3 gig, but I have a fair number of both coast and the inland lakes/rivers. Under Settings there is a section for Active Captain--sign in, frequency of update etc. |

As much as I'd love to do this trip, I'm having some second thoughts with some changes to my wife's work schedule and with some personal preferences with the Lake Powell gathering I had originally planned on attending. Nothing is set in stone yet, other than the Mississippi River gathering at Alton the weekend after Labor Day. At this time Jim, I'm pretty sure if I did join you guys on the Rivers here, I would NOT need parking at the place you arranged, as I would likely join up a day or two later. I know you asked us to get back to you a while back regarding parking. If there are others that would like to join you on this endeavor, I would definitely back out. (I know you prefer a limited number of boats.) Colby |

Thanks Colby for the update. Sounds like you have committed to too many C-Dory events. We cut back on other boating events so we could prioritize for just a few special endeavors.
I am getting my truck worked on today to get set for the 2,500 mile drive to Granville, Tennessee. We are leaving a few days early so we can enjoy the long drive through 7 or 8 states.
We will likely leave Sacramento September 1st on our drive. We should be in Granville on Saturday, September 8th in plenty of time to leave the dock Monday, September 10th at 8:00 AM so we can get through the first Cordell Hull Lock & Dam.
We are looking forward to this trip. Kathy enjoyed our Snake and Columbia Rivers cruise and she is looking forward to this adventure. _________________ Jim on M/V Pounder

There is some interesting scenery between here and there depending on the route you take out. Enjoy the trip and safe travels! I am a probably going to be joining the Lake Powell gathering. It just works out better with our calendar and my preferences. I love being able to trailer my boat and continue to put many miles on my trailer with little time at home in between! I had a blast with you guys on the Delta and West Coast river trips. Would still like to do the Catalina Island gathering some time. Just haven’t figured out a way yet to be in two places at the same time! If it works out, consider stopping one day at the Alton Illinois gathering just to meet some of the central coast folks. It’s probably not far off your route anyway! Colby |

We will probably be at Alton on Tuesday. It is about a good day's drive from Granville. |
