I've been reading the posts for a long tome but never joined until now - because I have a problem. I'm a retired old guy with a 2003 Honda BF50 that will not trim/tilt either from the throttle or the engine trim. I think it's the trim motor. an anybody tell me how to remove/replace the trim motor? Do I need to remove the entire BF50 to do that or can I do so while the motor is on the boat? Thanks! |

Well, my advice is going to get that darn thing fixed. And here it is:
Buy the Honda shop manual, $50. It'll give you pictures and a step-by-step procedure.
You'll get a lot of good advice here but not the detailed procedure (not to mention the troubleshooting procedure) that the manual will.

I have done a tear down on a tilt and trim motor on a 1992 45 Honda and was able to do it with the motor on the transom. The motor is very simple as I recall, like a miniature starter motor. I thought it probably needed brushes. It bothered me to break all of the waterproof seals on the cover to access the armature and when I got it open everything looked fine so I had a dealer look at it. It turns out that when I installed a new battery I sat it on top of the trim motors lead. It hid there and was never reconnected. I’ve always started with wiring since then. _________________ Gary & Gerrie former Minnie Swann owners

I have removed and replaced the tilt motor on a ‘99 Honda 90. You do not need to remove the motor from the transom but rather remove the max height stop on the motor pivot, then rotate the motor over center into the splash well. From there all off the bolts attaching the tilt motor are accessible. Initially I had the motor rebuilt at a local auto electric shop, but eventually ended up buying the OEM Honda part at highway robbery prices. Hope this helps, Ken |

Thanks to all that replied. Truly appreciated. I believe the problem is in a connection or possibly the relay, but if necessary I will need to remove the t/t motor. Just didn't want to pull the BF50A motor if unnecessary, and the manual I have does not show a process where the motor is NOT removed. I figured there was more collective wisdom than I have, and there obviously is! |

Does it make noise or partially lift?
Fluid level been checked?
Does it work with motor running? Does motor start quickly?
I would check fluid and all electrical connections including battery terminals and outboard side of battery cables.
I expect the motor has manual trim release screw. Loosen per manual and raise and lower motor hand to see if binding or resistance.
I don’t have factory shop manual but found owners manual at
https://marine.honda.com/support/Manuals/Models/BF40
And describes trim manual release _________________ Brent Barrett |

Shop manual should have a SOP on relay testing and you need DVM. Start with is relay getting power |

I think it has a 15 A fuse, check it.
Hammer time
Tap trim motor gently a few times |

Danger Marine, a set of Aussie videos on ob motor repair, offers diagnostics and the fix for a similar problem.
Try youtube.com, then search there for: Fixing the trim tilt on an outboard motor
This might do it as well:

I think it is a Honda 40 that he runs through.
I've enjoyed his series. |
