Just spent 3 days on the boat, running my relatively new Honda EU1000 generator. Today I try to start it to heat the oil for an oil change and it won't start. New spark plug fires when grounded to engine. New gas, and the carb is clean inside. Finger over the spark plug hole shows good compression. Starter fluid squirted down the carb does nothing. I have fuel, compression, and spark but not a hint of it trying to start. Anyone out there have any ideas? _________________ I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR - That's what makes the search so exciting! |

Reset the breakers, open the fuel tank vent, and check the oil level. _________________ 2003 CD22 Cruiser with Honda 90 |

I had a similar problem with my new EU2000i last year. Like Almas said, make sure the vent on the fuel cap is open!
I went crazy last year thinking I had a clogged carb or something because my generator would only run for a minute or two then shut off. Come to find out I had the fuel vent closed!!!!!!!!! _________________ <><><> Jason <><><>

If the problem is not the fuel vent, double check the oil level. It does not have to be down very much to not start or also shut down. _________________ Jack

The most common problem is dirt or debris in the carburetor jets. Even though it ran last week, it is possible that you got a small piece of debris into one of the jets. After the diagnostic tour, and being sure that everything is set properly (the newest 2200 have a fuel shut off valve also, so another thing to check.), I pull the carb, put some cleaner into it and the jets, then blow out with compressed air after sitting for a few minutes.
One would think it would fire with the squirt of ether--but the fuel air mixture has to be close to optimal; too much or too little may not fire. _________________ Bob Austin

Trouble shooting a combustion engine involves inspection/evaluation of the
four phases common to all:
"SUCK" (air intake) clean air filter? debris?
"SQUEEZE" (compression) clean spark plug?
"BANG" (ignition) Gas/ignition valve turned on? fresh uncontaminated fuel?
"BLOW" (exhaust) blockage?
Add generous curse words and a stiff kick or two and your problem will most
likely abate.
Aye.

That "debris" may not be recognized as such at first glance. A Honda I had used for years would not start one day. After much hair pulling I discovered that the air filter had become saturated with oil(forget how that happened). It looked clean but the oil that had saturated the paper would not allow air to pass through it. Got a new filter and it ran for many more years.
