I'm getting a new trailer for my CD 22, and for just a few dollars more I can get a slightly larger trailer. In case I step up to a 25 down the road, I'm considering it.
But the max length is 23' 7" from boweye to transom. So will a CD25 fit?
One weight, the max net capacity is 6700 lbs., (that's net capacity, not GVWR) and I've found posts here detailing weight so I think I'd be OK there... looks like I could be around 5000 lbs. without gas or water, and for 80% of the 6700 capacity I could be at 5360 so that leaves around 360 for gas/water. I can live with topping off right before launch or moving some gear into the truck if the weight goes much over 5300 lbs. _________________ Tom Whitten

One of the best things about the CD22 is it's portability (IMO). So having a trailer is a good thing. When you sell your 22 the new owners might want it on a trailer, so keeping the trailer for your next boat might not be possible. I wouldn't have one without a trailer.
As you note, the payload limitations of your new trailer may not be practical when applied to a CD-25. |

You would be far closer to reality with a 10,000# "gross rating" on a trailer for a loaded 25 |

I think that 6700 lbs is too light for the C Dory 25. I would be shooting closer to the 8000 to 8500 range. Gas is close to 7# gallon, and the tank is 100 lbs—-that is 700# more. Then water at 8#/ gallon is another 120#. Food, anchors, chain, gear clothes. Most boats are going to be very close or beyond the capacity of the trailer—might be OK, if you just need to go a few miles. But if you want to fully utilize the C Dory capability—you want a more robust trailer. _________________ Bob Austin

Thanks for the replies. And thanks, Bob, I trust your judgement. I'd seen other posts showing it was around 5000 without gas, water, or extraneous gear, but maybe that's not accurate.
I also just discovered that on that 6700 # trailer my CD22 is short of the minimum length by a few inches. So I'm going with the next step down, 6300# Loadrite aluminum tandem, that fits my boat and puts me at about 70% capacity w/out gas or water, and about 75% fully loaded. I'd like to be around 80% but the next step down from there is 5200 #, but 14" wheels, and I'd be at 90% capacity fully loaded.
So the 6300# is the only one with 15" wheels that's closest to my weight capacity target.
FWIW I talked with Owens & Sons, they were great but I just couldn't justify going all the way to FL and back, and trying sell my existing trailer down in FL, etc. And I want to be able to "supervise" the fit... I do a lot of launching, and I'll be putting some serious miles on this so I want the 22 to be perfectly fitted. So I'm going with Loadrite, and there's a great dealer in my area that I trust.
Looking forward to some road/water trips! |

Uh, why would a C-Dory 25 measure only 23' 7" from boweye to transom? I would make a wild guess that there is 25 feet of boat there. And there have been several threads pointing out that a 25 weighs ~7500# in the water.
Given those thoughts, there's a lot of difference between the 7500 carrying capacity of a trailer that can carry a 25 and the 5000 lb capacity (assumed) of a trailer that can carry a 22. If nothing else the heavier trailers spring rate would hammer that poor 22 a lot. And you're buying more expensive tyres, the brakes are different, etc..
Buy the trailer for what you have, not what you want.

The point of the foredeck is what sounds like 1' 10" farther forward than the bow eye. _________________ TyBoo Mike

This is on a 22, but you can see the bow eye is aft of the fore deck point (bow), and though I don't have the measurements it would be proportional on a 25.

I have never seen a boat that had a "BOW EYE" at the tip of the bow! If the Question had been what is the overall length of a CD 25 There would have been a different answer.
The original question was " LENGTH FROM BOW EYE TO TRANSOM & according to my little yellow rolly up thingy with all the numbers & lines on it the 25' C-Dory in my driveway measures 23' + or - a inch or two.

tsturm, you do know that the overall length of a 25 is listed at over 25', maybe 25 1/2?. I'll measure the difference tomorrow and then we'll all be happy
What I'm also saying is that the 25 is longer than the guy is wishing and therre's a lot of difference between the trailers. At one time I changed the 14" tyres on a boat trailer for 15" tyres. With the stiffer sidewalls the boat nearly shook apart.
