The other thing with batteries is that in some inexpensive brands, a C or D size battery may only have a AA or even AAA equivalent battery inside. Usually you can tell be comparing the weight of these batteries to a "real" C size battery.

I got one of the flare lights on sale last year. Seems to be a quality product.

Mark, lots of good points. I received my SOS light a few weeks ago, marked on the batteries the date, and installed them. Actually I wanted to put Lithiums in it. But after looking high and low, it doesn't appear any of the regular manufacturers make a lithium C cell. So I stuck Alkaline in it. However, I think I will check them every few months, as I've had batteries break down and leak acid out in the past. I still have my flares, but at least I can keep those a little longer now past the expiration date! Colby

Good points on this thread. We still carry flares but I have them for kayaking so there is a little overlap in our purposes.

If you like the idea of these lights, but maybe not the cost/size, or using them exclusively, consider something like this as a supplement to your traditional signaling.

There are different models and they cost little, work great as personal flashlights as well as strobes, and take a standard battery you can find lithium verions of if wanted.

We have had great service from three of these on our PFDs and would by them again.

Greg

From a few yrs ago

The link on the thread is no longer good, but I found similar devices for $100-250. And that's just one quick search.
