A fellow brat PM-ed me asking if a 150 Yamaha is a good choice for the 25. I thought I'd share my answers with every one because the question does come up quite often. My replies are below.

"The 150 has been a good engine. It now has about 1300 hours on it. Almost all in salt water. Yesterday we were out fishing with 5 large people, full fuel and prawn & crab gear, down-riggers and rods and it planed the boat easily. To cruise at about 16 kts I was at about 4500 RMP. A 150 is totally adequate for the 25. That said most people re-powering are going with 175-200 hp engines. The yammie 175-200 weights almost the same as the 150 and has more charging power. If i was re-powering I probably would choose the 175. The extra HP would (I hope) allow a slightly bigger prop and a drop in RPM for the same cruise speed and maybe a slight improvement in fuel cost. I don't want to go faster because the 25 is not designed as a fast cruiser."

"Great. Hope it works out for you.
We had 4 prawn traps, 3 crab traps, 4 rods, two down-riggers, a pot puller, and a big cooler. Of course the cockpit is totally packed until the pots are down. The five people in the boat would average about 230 lbs. When pulling the pots we have two people in the cockpit and 3 in the cabin. You have to pay attention to the stern weight cause when pulling the pots the stern turns to the wind. It was about 2-3 ft yesterday at times and we filled the splash well once. No problems, we just had to pay attention. I usually only fish 2 rods when trolling for salmon. Less tangling with inexperienced people on board. Not a great haul, just a couple of dozen prawns, 3 crabs and a couple of undersized chinook. We'll try again tomorrow. Too windy today.

Oh yeah. We were warm and dry in the cabin with the Wallas furnace and the standard Wallas cooktop heater going. The cooktop heater is not enough to warm a 25 to t shirt level at this time of year. You need to get the temp up in the cabin in order to keep the condensation off the windows, otherwise you will always be wiping the windows down in order to see. It was 2-4 C out with rain and a few snow flakes.
The two folks we saw out in a soft top boat looked decidedly cool. LOL "

I forgot to tell him we also had a 60lb black lab on board as well. I guess you might say we had a "full compliment of crew". lol

Cheers

Ron

I had a 150 Suzuki on an '07 25 and a 200 Yamaha on a '17 25. If money is not a concern get the 200.

Agreed. I had a v6 200 Suzuki on mine. Its also nice to have the bigger alternator output.
