This is so sad for our coast.

The video is inspiring.

I am very proud of our First Nations Peoples for standing up against the farms.

I believe they, if anyone, can force change.

Alexandra Morton, a true hero.

I just donated. If pipelines can be stopped so can fish farms.

Larry, Thanks for bringing this up. I was at Alert Bay, BC summer of 2016 and serendipitously attended a meeting there with Alexandra Morton, and the First Nations leaders from the BC Coast from the Fraser River to Haida Gwaii. It lasted for about 4 hours and was full of information, speaking and video, music and dancing, and a feast of bounty.

I was able to meet Alexandra and talk with her briefly and with many of the First Nations representatives. It was a pretty memorable experience.

This weekend I participated in a "protest flotilla". (Sorry Tom but there is a first time for everything.) It was sponsored by Our Sound- Our Salmon and by Sound Keepers and was on the southern end of Bainbridge Island and there was a pretty significant turnout. Over 40 power boats, from a 50+ foot sailboat, several large commercial fishing boats (seiners and trawlers), many native fishing vessels including a big vessel from the Lumi Sea food processing company, lots of pleasure craft, including a few C-Dorys, and about 75 kayaks.

This is like the turnout I saw in BC for the First Nations support. If it can work there, and it will, then maybe it can work here too.

This comment was taken as derogatory by my friend Tom. That was not my intent, but that I should stand for what I believe is right. I know Tom personally and I am thoroughly convinced that if he believes in something he will stand for it. It was meant as an apology to Tom that I was taking a stance opposite his view in this issue.

Sorry Tom, no offense meant, I respect your right to believe as you want, and to say so. I also try to keep a fair distance from political views here. Just don't think it is the place.

As to what is "right and truth" time will tell.

Thanks Larry. I have been to those farms listed, (as you probably have been too), there and it would be nice to see the area without the farm floats, big signs and green buildings. Might not be a good idea to anchor in any of those areas though, unless they are required to take all their underwater cabling with them.

Larry, thanks for the post and link. Looks like Alexandra is still using her C-Dory (she calls her “speed boat”. One of the pictures in her article shows the port aft corner of her ( I believe “8Cool Classic.

Quote:
“The people with vision know that fish farms are going to go,” hereditary and elected leader Don Svanvik, Namgis. ….

From one of the eight First Nations chiefs in cooperative attendance at the Alert Bay counsel where /first nations law is set.

A short summary of the meeting follows.
At first Horgan didn’t give an inch. His language seemed dismissive – I am hear to here your stories about what salmon mean to you. “Stories,” no the indigenous leaders were not there to share stories, ….. Then in an unscripted moment, leaders Bill Wilson and Willie Moon took Horgan to task on the fact that all but two of the salmon farming Licences of Occupation in the Broughton Archipelago will expire in June 2018…..Chief Moon pointed out that when Marine Harvest puts young fish into farms with only 8 months of tenure left they knew full well that it would take 20 months to grow those fish to harvest. Moon wanted to know would Horgan put Marine Harvest on notice?.... Horgan replied “If those leases are up in less than two years they shouldn’t be able to restock.” Agriculture Minister Popham heartily agreed. The moment passed, but three cameras captured the exchange and what is spoken in the Big House becomes law.

On Friday the 13th in the pre-dawn October morning the Viktoria Viking entered Knight Inlet. The Viking extended a large hose across the walkway and young Atlantic salmon poured into the waters of Knight Inlet. With its load discharged the Victoria Viking pulled out and began steaming back out the inlet for another load. The two zodiacs came around the corner and picked up 9 SWAT officers.

The BC First Nations folks are taking a firm stand. More power to them.

I still can't find that Youtube where the divers filmed under a salmon pen. But this one is just as good. They put a GoPro camera on a pole and dropped it into pens. Just skip to minute 6:00.

The fish look much better as a nice fillet in the grocery store.
