I have a 22' C dory cruiser. Love the boat. What I don't like about it is the roof is too low. I'm wondering if the stability of the boat would be affected by cutting the roof off, raise the cabin walls 10", and reattaching the roof. I'd either raise the Windows 10" or replace them with larger Windows. Has anyone done this to their Dory? Any thoughts?

The room is laid on top of the fiberglass sides of the pilothouse. To remove, just cut the tabbing inside. There may be some sealant under it aft..

However, I think it would really look strange--You might get custom windows--or make you own of Acrylic or Lexan (I have done that in several boat).
10". I am 6'2" and no problem with my 22, and the height. If you are over 6'4" the bunk is going to be cramped anyway.

The side windage would be increased, and not going to be real easy to get all of the geometry correct--especially with the slanting windshield. If you went straight up in front--that also would ruin the aesthetics.

My advice is not to do it.

Thataway, thanks for your input. I didn’t think about the windshield angle. I guess another option would be cut the cabin wall at the gunwales and build up from there. Hmmm!

You might come out ahead by just selling your 22, and buying a high top model 22 cruiser. They made a lot of them.

The hull and deck are one molding. You could cut just above the deck--but 10" would be huge--again--under the windshield may be an issue. You will have to take the galley side wood apart. That forward part is supported by the small dog house forward, not the bulkheads forward in the boat..

Could it be done? Probably. Wise to do--no.

Have you been aboard the "hi top" boats? They have about 6'10" as I remember.

If it is the helm area?--there may be other options.

You could always ask the factory to make you a high top and just replace the top.

BEST answer yet in my opinion!
I was going to suggest lowering the sole which would eliminate messing with the windows LOL.

Go for the High top model or an added high top from the factory. It would fit properly and look good plus be less custom work needed.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I did not know there was a high top model. I also thought they stopped making C Dory years ago. Does anyone have a photo of a high top Dory?

Can you tell me how much window height is gained with a high top?
With gratitude,
Izzy

No window height is gained. This is a picture of the high top in which you can see only the center raised section of the roof is higher than the standard model.

Below is an example of the standard roof

It sounds as if you need to either change the height or cant of your helm seat, or learn to live with the window height of the current boats. They are not like a huge window pilot house boat--but as you get used to the windows, there is plenty of field of view.

Describe what you see as the problem.

There is a lightly used "HighTop" here:

http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t=25845&highlight=

Might make more sense to just get this one. It is a 2007 22 Cruiser with a High Top and with low hours on the OB.
