Besides that, you gotta keep him around in case he really does figure out how to grow Seagrams.

Interesting reading on the subject. I dont smoke and dont care to be near it. Have a few friends that still smoke and they are very respectful of non smokers. I've never felt a need to ask someone to stop smoking and its not an issue on my boat. BUTT?! I would like to know who are the people leaving large amounts of butts outside of stores.parking lots, sidewalks etc. I know its none of my friends but thats the sort of thing that ticks off a lot of people. Kinda like blowing your nose and leaving the tissue anywhere. Thats my $00.02 worth.

I really like what Byrdman said, all people are different and we all have our quirps and habits, good and bad. Being an ex smoker I don't care for cigarettes either but if my friend wants to smoke, fire up outside please and be good to your mother......

No hard feelings, harrassment, preaching or any other negative. Just a quiet but firm no smoking on our boat.

Great stuff! Been there, and done (most of) that.

Smoked my first Camel (non-filtered) in 1948. Smoked from then until April 24, 1981.

Used to carry my cigarettes in the handlebars of my tricycle. (Pull off the handle grip, stuff cigarettes in the opening, and put back the handle grip. When it was time to have another cigarette, just remove the grip, lean the tricycle over, and shake it, and sooner or later a cigarette would fall out.)

Smoked from then on, and in early 1981 was smoking about 2 1/2 packs a day. Got up one morning after my usual smoke before I got out of bed, jumped into the shower, and blew out my left lung. Total collapse.

On the way to the hospital, I lit up a Marlborough, and took a puff, and nearly passed out. Not a good time to be smoking!

Bottom line, the doc (a 30+ year thoracic surgeon) said that he had never seen lungs as bad as mine, and told me to never smoke again. Period. If I did, I should find another doctor.

Quit that day. Been glad ever since. Quitting wasn't even all that hard to do, since I was pretty much hating it for the last few years that I smoked. It's just one helluva hard habit to stop.

No qualms against cigarette companys, parents who smoke, or anything like that. I chose, I paid, but was fortunate to have a lung blowout rather than something worse.

Smoke on my boat if you want, as long as you follow my rules. Smoke in my house if you want. As long as you're only gonna be there for a few hours. But if you can find a way to quit, I would certainly encourage it!

Ken

Up here in Alaska we lose a lot of folks every year in boating "accidents". Although alcohol is a reported factor in most of the fatalities, I've never heard of anyone ramming a dock, rock, or another boat because they'd lit up a smoke. I've never noticed a butt in the water, but brown bottles and aluminum cans are retexturing the sea bottom even up here. Dead things on the beaches are tangled in plastic 6-pack rings and choked on bottlecaps, but I've never seen a puffin dead from puffin. Now, I'm not a smoker, but I think the clear and present danger of drinking at the helm gets overlooked while we debate the political correctness of smoking on the swim step .. . . . So I wonder . . . .How many anti-smoking nazis out there drive their boats while drinking? Who is the greater danger? Just my $0.02
