My stove is starting poorly and popping and flaring and blowing out the flame. Before I ship it up to Scan I thought I'd ask if anyone has performed the cleaning procedure themself. In other words, disassembly, cleaning, wick replacement, and reassembly.

The proceedure is not hard, just tedious. Getting the Wallas out is probably the hardest part. You'll need a small drill bit to clean the orofices on the burner can and probably (sounds like you've got it) unplug the fuel line (it's the "wick") injector.

Call Karl and he'll walk you through it (Scan Marine).

OK, talked to Karl. He walked me through it. Doesn't seem too bad. Besides, if I screw it up it'll just go to Scan. Anyway, when I get around to it I'll take some pictures and post them for the gang. BTW, he's going on vacation from 12-13 to 01-06. Scan will be open 3 days a week. Mon,Tue, Fri. No service will be available 'til he returns.

Given how many of us are dependent on our Wallases, having a good set of photos and step-by-step instructions on cleaning and servicing in the Brat Archives would be a heck of a good thing. It would make us all so much less reliant on Karl, prince of a fellow that he is.

"Given how many of us are dependent on our Wallases," -- agreed, a lot of utility is lost without that little cooker functioning IMO. I am so thankful I didn't go with my first instinct (cheaper) and buy the alchohol stove.

There is a good thread on the thermocouple change in the interior section as well.

Once you get it back together it might smoke for awhile (into the interior) as diesel is cooked off whatever surfaces it's been spilled on (happens when the unit is turned upside down (or shipped back to you). Just a warning so you're prepared for that -- simply keep the unit on until it stops (and on mine that was hours).[/quote]
