While doing maintenance on 49er, I removed the bilge drain plug and found it rusted and barely if at all functional - maybe why I was getting water in cockpit while under way. It's an expanding rubber and brass plug. Wondering if all of you use same or anything better?

I use something similar and pull it about once per year just to inspect it (indoor storage). I also have a spare on board in case it fails or is lost.

I can see how it could corrode to the point of causing a minor leak.

Try and find one which is all bronze. Definitely something which needs inspection regularly,. There have also been a few instances where the tube has loosened and some water come in thru that area. On our 25, we pulled the drain plug, filled the area with thickened epoxy, redid the hole, and epoxied the tube in place.

My Catamaran has threaded bronze plugs--I feel quite a bit safer.
