Mike, I really want to go but I would be much happier going with someone who has been there before.

At the moment, it looks like August will work best for me.

I'm thinking that I would like to go to the West Coast of Vancouver Island (near Tofino) between June 29 and July 11.

Is anyone else interested in launching at Grice Bay and exploring this area around that time?

These dates would give you just enough time to drive across Vancouver Island and launch again somewhere Comox and go the Powell River CBGT.

I am guiding in Haida Gwaii until at least July 2nd (not sure about whether I am doing July 3 to 10 as well), so I can't commit to doing that at the moment.

If I am on the water during that time, I am planning on being in the Broughtons, Port Harvey July 1 and ??? for the next few days. Might only be for a week this year.

Stupid question of the week. Do these hot-springs smell like sulfur? I have never experienced one. I'd assume they do. Reason I ask is legit; I suffer from asthma and sulfur is a huge no, no. The one time my family tried to go to the active volcano on Hawai'i, I ruined the visit by nearly dying. I kid you not.

I am considering the West Coast of Vancouver Island this month or next month but I would rather go with another boat. Is anyone planning to explore that area this year?

Sounds like you had a great time up there this summer, Sandra. Any thoughts of going back again. I think I would prefer to go farther north and do the northern 2 in lnlets instead of the southern ones. Since I don't have bottom paint, I like the idea of pulling the boat out and giving it a good bottom cleaning after about 2 - 3 weeks, give it a good day to dry and then relaunch in the other inlet.

I have not been to Quatsino Sound so I can't really comment on that, but I did both Nootka Sound and Clayoquot Sound this summer and Alberni Inlet the first year I got my boat.

They are all worthy of visiting and each very different from each other.

When I went to Nootka Sound, I didn't go over to Kyuquot and I think there was still a lot to see there. The inlets to Zebalas and Tahsis reminded me of Jervis Inlet - long inlets with steep sides and not many places to anchor. Between Esperanza and Gold River there were more places to stop and lots of fishermen. Commercial fishermen in Zebalas and sports fishermen in Tahsis.

Clayoquot Sound is much shallower. Tofino Inlet was almost deserted and had lots of protected anchorages. There were enough boats to make me feel safe, but I was alone in every anchorage. Tofino was very shallow with lots of water taxis and tour boats and required you to pay attention to everything around you including the pod of orca that swam by as soon as I launched my boat. Sydney Inlet had a whale in it and therefore tour boats went by regularly. Sulphur passage was beautiful. Hot Springs Cove is worth a visit.

Of the three inlets I visited, Clayoquot Sound is the one I enjoyed the most. It is a special place and well worth the drive to get there.
