With release of a few new models recently, there are changes taking place to maintain feature support plus some bug fixes and other non-specific tweaks.
Example for a 741xs
Changes made from version 6.50 to 6.60:
Added support for 2017 built-in US mapping.
Added the Navaid Labels toggle.
Added magnetic variance updates.
Other performance improvements and bug fixes.

Jeff Siegel sent his last "Active Captain newsletter" today. In it was announced that there was going to be a new Garmin / Active Captain App. It implied that there was going to be a whole new series of Garmin Chart plotters which were going to be interactive with the app, and that the Active Captain information would be on these chart plotters. There was no information if older chart plotters would be supported. (Which is a disappointment.) Quote: | The free all-in-one ActiveCaptain™ mobile app allows you to manage your marine experience from nearly anywhere. It creates a simple yet powerful connection between your compatible mobile device and your compatible Garmin chartplotter, charts, maps and the boating community. |
You have to have a Garmin Account, and that will work across all of the Garmin platforms--including hand held, car, RV, Air and marine plotters--as I understand it.
Quote: | All-in-one App for the Ultimate Connected Boating Experience
OneChart™ lets you access and update all your charts and maps from your mobile device and purchase new ones to use on your chartplotter
Get smart notifications, such as calls and texts, on your chartplotter display when paired with the app
Connect to fellow boaters in the ActiveCaptain Community for up-to-date feedback on marinas and other points of interest
Make, save and transfer routes and waypoints between the app and chartplotter — with zero button presses¹
Easily upload and download the latest Garmin Quickdraw™ Contours content from the community — with zero button presses |
Looking at the comparable platforms--it appears that my one year old, several thousands of dollars of chart plotters etc--do not support these apps.(1041xs and 741xs--and associated Chirp/downscan, Radar etc) But the above links by Greg, are for the comparable devices.
It will be very interesting to follow the twists and turns--including the Navionics buy and see what else transpires. There is mention of crowd sourcing depths in Garmin charts. I had just updated my Garmin Blue Chart Mobile a couple of days ago when I bought a new "i pad pro"--and the app update still works tonight.
There are also some changes on the "Active Captain" web site. A new "flash map" apparently is either available or in the works--I don't see it on my MAC.
The old 'Live map" works, but seemed to be a little slower...may just be a quirk. _________________ Bob Austin

Why isn't my Garmin showing the channel marker "numbers"? It's showing the channel markers but no numbers. I can't figure it out. _________________ 2007 25 Cruiser 150 Suzuki (2013-2016)

Found out the answer. I got on Garmin's website and "chatted" with them online.

I have your 1040sx and 741xs both 2017. How do I get it to show the channel marker "NUMBERS" on the chart? It shows the channel markers but not the "NUMBERS". Thanks, Ken
Michael:
To see the numbers the cursor must be over the buoy.
Kenneth
i'll try that! Thanks!!!!!
Michael:
Anything else today?
Kenneth
no way to have them showing all the time?
Michael:
Sorry but no. They used to,but there were a number of complaints about clutter. Why didnt
Michael:
make it a setting you could toggle I couldn't tell you
Kenneth
?
Michael:
meaning, why they didn't make it a setting you could turn on and off I don't know. They just made it like the way it is now instead of a setting to turn on and off.
Kenneth
You were very very helpful and answered something I've been trying to figure out for months. Thanks!

While doublechecking for any new updates on my Garmin GPSMAP's 541 and 840, I see that the 840 is now also considered a Legacy product. The 541 has been listed as Legacy product for some time. How time flies... (However, the GMR18HD is still listed in the newer electronics software bundle.) |
