1500 hrs on well maintained 1999 Honda 90s. Trouble ahead? Life expectancy before major expenses? |

I don't have personal experience but know an individual in the San Juan Islands that ran 4000 hours on a carb 90 HP on a Glacier Cat. It was still running good when he sold it.
Have also heard from a Honda Dealer that 4000 hours is not unusual in well maintained commercial use where the engine is being run almost every day.
Others on the site likely have personal experience with high hour Hondas.
I am interested because I have an injected 90 hp on the CD 22. |

Thanks. Less than 100 hrs per year means not likely run very much day to day. I'm looking at tomcat w twin 90s. |

m2cw bur need more info. How well maintained and WOT speed?
Incorrectly propped will lower WOT speed and will lug it and or some dont run at WOT when it is safw on water yet the OB is made for it
Compression can be checked and leak down test if needed
It can be scanned with YDS software for codes, time at various rpms and other info. Be sure they test it running and off and get printouts

I would at least get an oil analysis, do leak down and compression tests. If computer information is available--very informative.
The hours is not a issue--but storage may be. Was it fogged? Also since carbureted, you have to drain the carburetors if not used for a month or so. If I run it every 2 weeks then I don't drain. Better if you can get non ethanol fuel.
Also Hondas tend to have a bit more corrosion issue than some of the others, so you want to be sure that bolts are free and able to be turned. One Honda I bought apparently had never been flushed, and left in the salt water for at least 6 months out of the year.
I like my Honda 90, but would rather have a post 2006, fuel injected, and larger alternator. _________________ Bob Austin

Homer: Those motors could last another 10 years or they could last another 10 months. Use the fact that they're 18 year old motors and negotiate a DEEP discount off the asking price. _________________ <><><> Jason <><><>

If this was a fresh water engine I wouldn't be as concerned .Salt water does bad things to good motors .If it was flushed and fogged every year putting it away then your chances are your motor might last another ten years . Living in Alaska and using the boat there. I would definitely have a kicker motor and Sea Tow.
I had a 2005 Yamaha 115 on my CC-23 and sold it with 1100 hours and 11 years .It still had good compression and no leaks .But for a small amount per year I got a Merc 115 CT and 5 year warranty and I still have Boat US for towing but I don't worry as much going out in the Gulf . Run the Honda when it breaks buy a new or used motor and Go Boating . Jim _________________ retired 8/08 from UAL, still working pt tm

The Hondas are fairly bulletproof . I wouldn't be scared of 1500 hours.
Brent , YDS software is Yamaha specific and no carbureted motor is scan able anyways . That doesn't tell you much about this question anyways , which is lifespan .
Take out the thermostats ,look in the water jacket .Is it corroded or have deposits ? Do compression and see if all are "holes" are close in value . Check lower unit oil and make sure there is no water . Is steering arm corroded? Some do and some don't . I have seen older Hondas with no corrosion and have seen them with horrible corrosion . It not too hard to see. Better yet have a reputable Honda certified professional do an engine survey.

Thank you all. Based on price and overall condition of this boat, I am going to pass. Still looking for a nice 24' era Tomcat on left coast.
Here is ad in case anyone else interested.

I received reent survey report with a lot more pics. Just not the level of care and maintenance I would want at that price particularly in light of 18 yr old motors. |
