Jay, lol, glad you see our dilemma. We've taken to saying: Our vessel's name is Here & Now and we're x-minutes away from you.

We obviously needed a work-around

The other boat I had prior to my C-Dory, I had renamed Here & There. I thought it was pretty unique. Guess not really. LOL. Of course my biggest problem when calling on the radio, is once in a while I would slip and start to say American.... (I was an airline pilot before retiring, and radio calls were frequently made. It was too easy to slip when I picked up the microphone on my boat and slip up with my more common call sign.... LOL) Colby

I appreciate the objectivity. You got my attention. I was trying to be clever of name, perhaps to the omission of the practical. So I'm now approaching a name from a more sensible standpoint.

I sat down and brainstormed. I like C-quin (as in a small shiny object on a greater background). But when I first mentioned that name Paulette asked me, "Sea Queen?" Your point was ringing in my ears.

The suggestions of Glacier-C and Eye-C fit our area. Icy Strait is our front stretch if water, and Glacier Bay our back door. I like the suggestion too of waiting a while and C what time generates as a name. At this point chances are I'll abandon the C or Dory theme altogether and go for something else.

Thanks VERY much for the input. It is appreciated.

I thought I had a pretty simple, easy name, but have had a few occasions where I could tell it wasn't getting across on the radio as clearly as it should so I have gone to saying the boat name at half speed "Sllleeeeeeeepppyy CCCCC" and that has worked ccoommpleeetlley.

I would drop the "Dory" and just call it "Sin Nombre." I like that. However, in this political climate I would hesitate naming my boat anything in Spanish...or Arabic for that matter, but then I regularly operate my boat around and across borders.

I do like Sin Nombre. But I can almost hear the cogitation on "Sin" if one tries to transliterate to English.

Another result of brainstorming that I tend to like, from the book of Psalms: C-lah (selah). I trust more folks would figure that out. I keep trying to use the C, but perhaps I shouldn't. Just Selah.

I once heard Bob (Thataway) admit at last years Hontoon Gathering that he considered "Piece of Ship", but that Marie nixed that idea.
Even without the '3 times on the VHF' practice.
Good call, Marie.

I-C Dory, Eye See Dory, Glay-C-er. I have heard "No Name" on the radio. Up north a couple summers ago, I was doing a call for "any C-BRAT". I got an answer, replied with a "move to channel ??" and shortly discovered the guys boat name was some version of "C-BRAT" but he didn't even know what a C-Dory was Laughing (When up in the Broughtons, I would try and make a "C-BRATS" call every day, hoping for a response from someone here).

Pick something that means something to you: geographically, or professionally, or hobby or family related. Because of my work in Sleep Med, I initially thought about using CPAP, but I had some questions about if I did some kind of smear lab tests Shocked Embarassed Dropped that one pretty quickly.

You don't have to use the "C", but for many it is part of the C-Dory mystique.

No C in my boat name and it works great. I like that it's a Tlingit word (though I'm on team Eyak), and that may be something that appeals to you in your region.

It refers to a legend where a creature that's half man/half river otter sheds their otter skin and lures the unwitting into the water, causing them to drown, then they don their otter skin and "rescue" the victim by turning them into a Kushtaka too.

I like it because it reflects the draw of the boat, luring me off to the water when I should be doing other things, and keeping me there and being my only means of coming home alive. My boat is my otter skin.

Maybe there are some native words that appeal in that way?

Kushtaka, great story. Nice to know the history/story behind the name. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Harvey!

I'll add that the boat came with this name, and being superstitious, did not change it, although we considered it. I'm glad we kept it.

In general I don't like to rename boats or dogs older than two.

I wasn't lured into using "C" as part of a clever name because I didn't want to have to explain or spell anything over the radio. Something like C-Mint might be cute, but KISS.

So I went with a simple name that I thought everyone knew. But as soon as I'm 100 miles from saltwater everyone says things like "I love that movie." What? Turns out that there was a 1960's movie starring Don Knots called "Mr. Limpet." I had to watch it. It's a weak plot, sexist, dopey, cold war cartoon about a guy who turns into a fish (not even a limpet). Made me want to change my boat name. Sometimes you just can't win.

Just for fun, here is a link to the thread "What's in a Name" about C-BRATS.

There is a link in that thread to a history lesson about the origin of the C-Brats and some D-Dory history. IIRCR, that was put in by Pat Anderson. Good reading, maybe helpful in the quest for a meaningful name.

Boat names are very personal. They are also fun.
I know many think longer on what to name their boat than their child.
It's a heavy like that.
Sure, consider how it sounds over the VHF. Most don't bother.
The important thing is to make it yours, what you like, and forget
what others think.

Aye.
Grandpa used to say, "To your own self be true."
