I have been looking at different Windlass's for my Classic Angler. Is anyone familiar with or has an opinion on The Quick Genius 600 Horizonal Windlass. It seems like a good Windlass and the price is reasonable. Also does anyone know what the boat thickness is where the Windlass would be mounted. Thank You Tug

As an even cheaper alternative, Defender has the Lewmar V700 Stainless Steel Vertical Windlass on sale for $590. It's a little more compact than a horizontal windlass, and has a stronger pull than the Quick. We've had good luck with the one that came with Journey On, and the 700 is the newer model.

I went to the Defender site but didn't see the Lewmar 700V for sale....there is a Freedom RC - 500 Series Windlass Kit for sale..Is this one any good..my only concern is that i may not have enough room with the anchor locker on my Classic. Ideally would like to find a Horizontal with Free Fall.....Was looking at Powerwinch but do not think they are any good.Tug

Many of us have had good luck with the Lewmar ProFish 700, which can be used as a free fall or power down windlass. The motor mounts on deck, so that you don't impinge on the anchor locker of the 22's.

I have never owned a Quick windlass, but generally the Lemars have a good reputation--agree with the power winch, but some have used them with success.

Try this:

I can't insert the URL as a normal embedded URL, but you can copy and paste (no spaces). Copy the whole thing except the ". Or search Defender for a V700 windlass.

The Quick windlasses are made in Italy. The Quick 600-H Genius is not in production anymore, and has been replaced by this one:

Genius - GP2 1500

The appear to be very high quality, and when mine was originally purchased, I'm pretty sure Jim was looking at quality and reliability. It has worked well when I have used it, and though it is nearly 10 years old, it has only really been used much over the last year, with a few uses before that.

Now I am looking at upgrading the rode, and there are some parallel threads up. Just wanted to renew this on for relativity.

In trying to do some upgrade to my ground tackle I was looking at adding length to the rode and changing from 3 strand to 1/2" 8 Plait Yale. My Quick 600 Genius has a 7mm (1/4") gypsy, which was not compatible with the 8 Plait.

I had ordered the 1/2" 8 Plait Nylon from Defender. After taking a look at that line, I really like it for the "hand". It is softer, more flexible, and lighter. It would be my first choice IF I could run it through my Quick windlass. I would be able to add almost 100 feet more in the locker.

I applaud Defender for bringing the issue to my attention before I got stuck with product that I could not use effectively. My research on the Quick company and dealings with them leads me to think they are pretty up and up. Their customer service was very helpful, and some of their newer windlasses might work. They gave me the option to change my gypsy with my windlass, is viable, though might be expensive due to having to change both the gypsy and the chain. Could work for some folks, I'm just not going there now.
