Anyone have any knowledge on where to catch coonstripe and pink shrimp? I have done spots regularly for years but have no info on coonstripe and pink shrimp. Just retired not dead!

john has an extensive set of online maps for fishing and shrimping and crabbing.

I catch coonies and pinks in area 8-1 both on West Whidbey and East Camano
the max depth in 8-1 is 150 ft. for them
you need smaller size netting on your pots also
I have also caught them in area 7 where the max depth is 200 ft.

this is my home grounds so it is all I can tell you. I would venture to guess that there should be other varieties besides spots in Hoods Canal area. just in shallower waters than spots. I am not sure what the regulations are for this area though

We messed around a little bit with spot and pink shrimp last summer. We bought four of the smaller mesh pots and gave it a shot. I can't really say I'd recommend it, unless your just looking for another activity on the water to kill time. For us it wasn't very productive. My dad I spent a day running around between Camano Island and Everett, dropping pots and seeing if we could get any real numbers. We came up with a lot of mud and about one meal worth of shrimp. We honestly couldn't bring ourselves to get motivated to go again.

Its nice that the season is long, compared to the few days we get for spots, but I'd have to spend a lot more time doing it to know if its a worthwhile activity. So far I'm not very impressed Smile

I think there is a reason it hasn't caught on in the Puget Sound like crabbing/ spot prawns.

The pink shrimp are so delicate, they have to be boiled with their shells on in order to peel them. The coonstripe aren't too bad, but they weren't as plentiful as the pinks.

Good luck if you decide to go for it. If a person found the right spot where they were thick, it could be worth it.

It might be a lot like spot shrimp in that it takes some time to get everything dialed in.

I used to shrimp in Discovery Bay, around Protection Island and toward Dungeness Spit. We fished from 150' to 300' deep. Mostly caught Humpys, Pinks and Coonstripe shrimp. I fished 4 traps (two for each of us) We limited most days, with most of them not Spot Shrimp. We caught 50 to 60 Spots per day, which was then the daily Spot limit. I haven't been back since 2004, but that Summer we caught 500 lbs in a 60 day period (June and July). Averaged 8.33 lbs per day. I don't know the current rules, but then we could leave the pots in 24/7. We checked them once each day. I had a good teacher, Jim Hull who shrimped commercial out of John Wayne Marina in Sequim Bay.

I too got fired up on coonstripe when I bought the boat. I have some commercial friends who fish crab, salmon & coonstripe here in Crescent City who do ok but with long strings & lots of pots I built 2 12x12 x24" pots then lost my marbles & built 2 30" conical pots out of rubber wrapped rebar using my friends ss conical pots as a pattern.Even with their professional help, I have never done well. They are also a lot of work with little return. Wish we had spots here but they are few and far between. If you loose your marbles, I have 4 bargain basement pots I can be coerced into selling!
