The race started about 8:30 AM today, and by 10 AM the leaders were approaching the Sea Buoy off Pensacola Pass. They will have a beat for the first few hours, and then the wind should clock to the East, and North East, giving a reach and then run.
There will be a front coming thru the area later in the day, with some rain.
It appears that there are 16 or 17 boats racing, although 22 had signed up.. One boat is still shown on land, some distance form the YC, and another just started.
The race is "cruiser friendly" Which boils down to some boats are cruising type of boats, but there are some serious racers in there also. There are a couple of boats capable of very fast speeds (all relative in sailboats), since there are several multihulls, (but no foilers).
This race dates back to the 1930's and then was last sailed in 1959. With the "political climate" changing, this will be the first race from Pensacola to Havana since 1959! |
