ugh...the 19th? same as the Everett Coho Derby?
If the 19th is the only day, I'll be in. But usually I avoid those derby days. Something about a $10,000 fish makes people ugly on the water. |

We'll be out this weekend looking for fish and hanging out at the Everett marina. The weather and latest reports of fish seems too good to pass up. Don't know about a derby but it'd be good to catch up if any c-brats are in the area! |

I'll be out Saturday, too. Participating in the Everett Salmon Steelhead Club member derby with friends. Probably spending night and going fishing again on Sunday. _________________ Patrick and Kim Walker

we drug downrigger balls all day today and only had one hit that did not make it to the boat. we were marking fish from 50 ft to 120 ft and tried all depths trying to entice them to bite to no avail _________________ Roger on the "SENSEI"

ya might do better Roger if you had some fishing gear in the water rather than just trying to knock in the head with a downrigger ball _________________ Ken

How about coho derby runs mid-september thru mid-october. Open to any c-brat in the world. We go on the honor system. As it stands now, nobody has a chance against Catch-22 A photo with a weight scale in background would be enough verification _________________

Another web forum with which I occasionally participate (Sport Fishing BC), did a member's derby last year that was similar in concept (but bigger, sponsored and more complicated since there were real prizes). The rules they used can be found at this link. I thought it was a pretty interesting idea and participated (but didn't win anything). If we were to do something like this in the future, we could have an "awards ceremony" in conjunction with some other C-Brats gathering.
Oh and if it's open to any C-Brat in the world, expect to get your coho butts kicked by an Alaskan or Canadian who is able to intercept some of those big "northern" coho that don't really make it down here. Even the coho off our west coast in the ocean are likely to be larger than the ones on the sound. I caught one in the high teens/low twenties last year out of Westport. It was the largest coho I've ever seen. Unfortunately, I dropped it overboard by accident while attempting to gut it on a slippery cooler top so without photos, it's only a fish story. _________________ Roger on Meant to be |

Roger, get one of those blue "Coho" fish cleaning troughs by Sea Dog.
One of my buddies forgot to clip the rope on the bleeding line off Westport and lost a 30 lb chinook. Heart breaker, but later landed a 25.
Derby idea sounds fun. |

Wow, after all these years, I don't feel so bad. During my 2nd year with the boat, I caught my biggest Puget Sound Chinook at Jeff Head, a 15 pounder. While finishing up cleaning the fish, I lifted it up with a cheap fresh water stringer which suddenly unsnapped, sending that beautiful fish to the depths below. What a nightmare. Needless to say, I'm extra cautious when cleaning my fish and do use those blue Coho fish cleaners.
As for the derby, great idea. Although Kevin doesn't necessarily have a lock on winning just yet. Troy is having a great Coho season as well. |

I keep waiting for my fishing derby prize to show up...I mean....look at that pic ..that fish is huge.
OK some folks may realize that that isn't me in the picture and it was taken at the turn of the century when Astoria had salmon that had been in the salt for maybe 8 years in preparation for their journey to Canada and the headwaters. Pretty damn amazing that 80-100 lb salmon weren't uncommon back in the old days |
