We do not want fridges, freezers, coolers, on our boat in the PNW. We have kept salad stuff up to a week in the bilge under the dining table. Best place to keep beer as well. Gets close to 59 degrees (cellar temp), keeps the beer flavour in so you can taste the hops etc. Of course, if you drink American beer, best to chill the heck out of it to make it drinkable!
Think I'll put my hard hat on now in case of 'incomings'............lol.

I applaud your Spartan existence and your KISS (keep it simple stupid) attitude. If I stored beer under the table down here on the Gulf coast I probably could cool it down to 80 F. I once blew my Adler Baurber in the Bahamas. A month without cold sundowners on the boat, was a tough storm to weather.
As for American beer, I have to agree with you, nasty stuff. Best beer I have found, outside Germany, is Presidente from the Dominican Republic. I think you can buy it in the states, but by the time it's watered down, pasteurized, homogenized, and corrected politically, it probably tastes just as nasty.
Thanks for your honest input. _________________ I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR - That's what makes the search so exciting! |

I hear your beer. Lake Superior is almost too cold to keep beer in the basement. KBC, Keweenaw Brewing Company, Liftbridge Brown, is ok anywhere between 37F and 60F. Pretty much all summer on the Great Lake. |

Oh Martin, you're in deep Kim chee! Come on down to Oregon, aka Beervana, and I'll buy you a real beer, none of that Molson, LaBatts or Whistler stuff We can find you something wit a 'bit' of hops to it. _________________ "And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. The Engel arrived today. I'm glad I went with the 40 liter and not the larger unit. I plugged it in, set it on freeze, and it was at 0° in about 90 minutes. Now to figure out where I'm putting it. |

Sweet! A friend of mine has the 40 and it's a great size. It's easy to get used to the dry/reliable cold! |

We made room for a Dometic CF-50 under the aft port seat after moving fresh water storage to a flexible tank in the forward bow compartment under the v berth. Photos are in our album.

Fantastic modifications Blue Rose! That album will sell your boat by itself if you ever have the need.

Jim and Jeannie,
WOW, that is a nice album and I really liked that toy model C-Dory on the opening page. Nice.
Greg is right. Thanks for sharing some really great ideas.

Hello Jim (Blue Rose)
And I second Greg's comment. Those are VERY well-done, professional-looking mods! You have definite talent for making those changes. Thanks for posting the pics. It helps give all of us ideas for our own boats.

Now I'm almost afraid to go look ! But of course I can't resist
Afterward: Very nice, and gave me lots of good ideas! (Now I wish I had a woodshop.)
I have a question on the CF-50 cooler under the portside/aft seat: You mention that you built up the co-pilot seat base by 4" for better visibility when underway. I'm thinking this would have included the after seat base as well, for consistency when sitting at the dinette table. If so, is that what allowed the CF-50 to fit? Or would/did it fit under the stock seat height?
Second, tangential question: What are the diagonal legs of your transom trailering straps attached to? It look like the trim tab upper arms, but I'm guessing it's not that since they are only molded plastic. Good idea on the diagonals -- would be useful to keep stern from wandering when on the trailer but with nothing rubbing on the gelcoat. |

I appreciate the compliments guys but I must thank the other C-Brats who willingly shared their ideas for the modifications. We just adapted them to our boat.
A CF-50 will not fit under a stock aft seat on a 22 because the hull slopes inward and does not give enough "length" to keep the freezer from sticking out into the walkway. Really what I did was to add the 4" to the top of the aft seat cabinet to raise the freezer to where the hull is wider. The final seat heights do match each other (so the table still makes into a bed) by leaving the co-pilot seat cabinet at its stock height and reconstructing the entire portside floor from the v berth bulkhead to the aft seat cabinet 4" higher to gain more usable storage under it. (I added a photo in my album)
The top hook of the diagonal strap is on the boat eye and the bottom hook is on a trailer bunk support.

Thanks for the additional detail. I've mused about changing something with the seat/table/foot height on the dinette, but never quite decided on anything. I'll have to give your ideas a "test run" when I'm next at anchor - see how the sight lines, etc. work out. |
