Thisaway is sitting in the entrance to little Oak Canyon, and have a very slow Verizon internet connection, from Navajo Mountain. Not a bad place to celebrate turning 79!

The trip has be hectic--My aunt with Alzheimer's was fine when we left S. Calif, but began to act up on Wednesday, and it looked that I might have to drive back to S. Calif. A few e-mails to my attorney, and the owners of the B & C, apparently have gotten things back on track…hopefully.

The front roof air conditioner on the RV went out on Friday--so any R & R during packing the boat was spent in the bedroom, where it was cool. Inside the front of the RV was 90, outside was about 95. The bedroom about 80~ But good conditioning for the lake trip! On Saturday, we got the RV hooked up to power at Big Water, so it is safe and what is left of the food will be preserved. I cannot say enough good things about the storage place there!

Saturday was hot on the water. I was going at displacement speed--and Marie kept saying "go faster, we need a breeze!" We stayed at Gunsite Canyon--perfect site, with about a 60 degree slope where the stern was--no chance of the stern hitting the bottom of the lake as those darn pesky PWC, wake board boats, and express cruisers went by at max wake speed.

The peace of the evening, as it began to cool off to 85, was shattered about every 10 minutes by one of the house boats firing off fireworks (Highly illegal, but no law enforcement on the lake). A 35 foot cruiser came by about 30 feet off our bow at about 9 PM, Max wake speed, just missing two stand up paddle boarders who had no lights on their "boats".

The next morning we get underway, and there was a good breeze with overcast all day. Temp probably was never over 90. Some rain, and a flash flood warning. So we decided to go up to Oak Canyon, where we knew we could get good protection. Pulled into about a 100 foot stretch of isolated sand--with relitatively few house boats around. (We can only see one currently--and no fire works so far). About 30 minutes later comes along a rental house boat--almost hits some rocks at the point, and decides to come in about 25 feet from our boat (spitting the difference between the rocks he almost hit, and our boat! I asked nicely that he find another place and pointed out several equally good alternatives. "What do you think, you own the lake--What happened to being neighborly?" (My guess they were form S. Calif. --) Where else would you want to live in "wall to wall houseboats?…

It is a nice evening, and maybe we won't have to run the fans all night. Temp is down to 82 at 8:30 PM Utah time.

I haven't scouted the little Oak Canyon---but the water level is almost exactly the same level as last year. If so, and if the configuration of the sand bar is the same as last year, I will try and get that area--since it was close to ideal for the C Brat gathering!

Tomorrow off to Iceberg canyon--vaguely hoping to find an iceberg~ We are thinking about hanging in that area, during the holiday weekend, and then going up the San Juan Arm.

Topped off the fuel at Dangling rope--8 gallons to do about 50 miles (several canyon side trips--not directly from launch). The total cloud cover remains, so we may not enjoy all of the fantastic moon/cloud shapes we saw with a full moon last night.

We hope a number of other C Brats will join us here on the 19th of Sept. I agree that the later in the month, is the best cruising time of the year. Water temp is 80 to 82 degrees, and sure feels good in the heat of the day!

Bob, we sure enjoyed your Lake Powell update & are looking forward to seeing you & Marie again at Oak Canyon. If plans work out, we should arrive there about the 16th.

Bob, it sounds like the summer crowd is making it a bit crazy. We'll probably see you at Oak Canyon if you're there a few days before the pot luck.

I hope all is well with your aunt!

See you soon.

Great memories from last year! Wish we could be there, but it is not our year for Lake Powell, with our China trip in October!

Happy 79 Bob! My son says the best thing about turning 79 (in 2 weeks for me) is that "it ain't 80". However, last weekend I was talking to an old friend who is 89. He lives alone , golfs twice a week, and square dances twice a week! So, congratulations and "keep on keepin' on".

Bob and Marie, We should get to Oak Canyon on the 17th. I turned 69 on 08/29 so I am 10 years behind you. Scare off the houseboats and We'll see you in a few weeks.

Happy Birthday Bob, and many more. Enjoy the lake, the time, the boat, and the company and the quiet. Keep and eye out for any glowing fish, (which I did see in the Broughtons. Up one night for anchor watch check at 01, and watched the Persedes meteor shower and a large school of fish moving under the boat, setting off the bio-luminescence. Really Cool.)

have a great time and be safe.

Happy birthday Bob - sounds like a great place to enjoy the day.

Those paddle boarders are hard to see at dusk with no lights. They like to go out on Lake Erie in the evening because that's when the chop dies down(usually). Some get out a fair way from shore.

Regards, Rob

Paddle boarders at night should be required to were a beanie with a blinking light on it.

I recently saw underwater lights you can put on your paddle board. Not as good as a beanie, but better than nothing.

Happy 79, Bob. Hope we will see you there, but it's 4 weeks till we're there.

Had my 80th birthday party yesterday, tho my birthday isn't until next week. Arrived back in LA 58 years ago, with just a BSA motorcycle and a 41 Ford. So for my party there were 24 persons related to me. Shows what sex and time will do.

Enjoy the lake. any news about the EPA spill reaching Lake Powell?

Boris
