End of July--early August. Usually departed from Port Alberni, and traveled by boat to Bamfield. We would always be told we were a week too late,or a couple of weeks too early

Got out Saturday and Sunday. Two absolutely gorgeous November days. Frigid in the AM though!
Fished Useless Bay both mornings early on the incoming tide then cruised to fish Possession Bar on the outgoing.
Landed a tasty 8 pounder on the first drop Saturday morning. Had one other take but didn't land. Slow for the rest of the day.
At the same waypoint from Saturday, hooked into a sub-legal (~18") on the first drop as well. After that, no other action from Useless or Possession Bar all day. But for 2 nice sized flounder on a spoon? That was a first. LOTS of bait, but no fish which was odd. Seemed to be the same story for most we spoke with on the water. Lots of seals too which may be a factor? Fish checker had close to 30 boats with only 8 fish caught. Had a few crab in the pots as well.
Was just too nice of a weekend! Calm wind and water with lots of sun!
The hot combo both days was Gibb's UV Red Racer flasher with a 2.5 White Lighting. I added a purple UV spatter back mini hootchie to the hook and some glow tape to back.
Anyone else get out recently?

Hey Troy! I thought that was your fish posted on Tom's Sporting goods facebook page. I knew it!
We've been out only twice since blackmouth opened. We fished Onomak point, right in front of the state park, baby island, and elger bay. We caught quite a few nearly legal fish, 19' - 21' but haven't got one in the boat to keep yet. On our 2nd trip, I had a beauty on in Elger bay that would have been bragging rights but it wasn't meant to be.
Across the bay towards baby island, the commercial crabbers had hundred of pots set right at 100 - 130', so we couldnt really fish over there very easily. That's a shame, I really enjoy that spot and had luck over there last winter.
Let's get together this winter, I got a new reel I'm dying to get a big'un on and see how it works. |

Way to go Troy! I might try to get the boat out in area 7 in December. Haven't fished for BM in a few years.

Reports are the San Juan's have been producing good fish. I'd like to get out their the next break in weather we have.
Fished 8-1/8-2 this past weekend. Couple keepers have come out of Elger Bay (not from my boat).
Columbia Beach was a mess of tidal junk and driftwood Sunday so only made a couple passes. Cruised up and fished Langley and caught quite a few shakers ranging from 6" to 16". Loads of fun just getting out on the water with the nice span on weather we had.
Area 9 opens back up in a week too. Fishing was decent before it closed. |

Tom: do you have to go to the Canon Digi-Troll 10 to get the bottom track features, or does the 5 do this? (price difference of course). Thanks, Mike |

Tcr- you can't be using crab traps to catch salmon
Tom's the cannon wiz but it looked to me that difference between those new fangled bottom tracking meat seeking downriggers was that on the model 5 you had to use the cannon transducer whereas the model 10 had more transducer options....I think those would be a pretty cool set up. _________________ Ken

I have the older digitroll 4's so I had to go to the web site and down load the manuals for both units. If you want bottom track you need the new 10's. The fives will connect to the bottom line depth finder. This allows the captain to control up to 6 downriggers from one stop. This is a set up that is used mostly on the great lakes where you can fish as many rods as you want. It is not uncommon to see a boat with 10 or more rods running at once. I read a articale by a great lakes charter captain that runs up to 16 rods at once including long lines, side planers, jet divers and down riggers all at the same time.
Around the PNW we are only allowed one rod for each fisherman ( there are exceptions) so the most down riggers I see are four but most people I know run just two. If you are running 2 in a small boat then there is no need for controlling them from a fish finder.
The new digitroll 10 is the one you want. There are always older digitroll 4 on ebay and some times on craigslist. Cannon has a great lifetime warranty on external parts. I have two new reels installed on my used craigslist downriggers for free.
If you want to try them lets get together and fish my boat some time in Feb. _________________ Thomas J Elliott

I stand corrected. I just did a little more searching and you can bottom follow with the digitroll 5's with the use of a hummingbird depth finder, some models. I would check to see if getting a seperate and new fish finder is more or less then getting the DT10's? You only need one transducer for a pair of dt10's if you get the connect cable. One unit is slave and the other is the master. This is how I have mine set up.
I'm going to call someone about the dt5's it make sure that info is correct. Seems to be a little difference of information depending on where I look. |

I have not been out but I heard that Point no point has been holding bait and producing fish for the last 3 weeks. Call johns sporting goods and see what he thinks. Then call Holiday sports for a San juan report. |
