I know a few of us talked about it last year so I thought I'd bring it up and see if there was interest, and how we might pull it off. Obviously it would all be in good fun. We could do kind of a c- brat get together/ wiegh in. Really informal at one of the docks or marinas. We could have small prizes for biggest fish of the day or weekend or largest total wieght of fish, or whatever. If anyone is interested, list what dates would work and lets see if we can get something togehter. Any ideas or suggestions welcome! _________________ Kevin Richards - Catch 22 |

I'm in. I just secured a slip at the Everett Marina. I think I'll probably stay there through September. Good idea Kevin.

Everett sounds good. What date? We should be targeting coho so late august or even early September. Will it be salt only or river fish too?
Another idea would be a on line contest spanning a month. All fish to be weighted on a scale in a picture or measured on a tape. Largest fish by the end of the month wins? just a few ideas _________________ Thomas J Elliott

If you're going to mention this on a public site, a word of warning - derbies require an additional permit from WDFW. It's not a big deal to obtain but it does cost money ($24 + $70 application fee). According the WA state law -
"A fishing contest is defined as any event where six or more licensed anglers (age 15 and older) fish competitively for game fish and determine winners, regardless of the prize value. A fishing contest permit is required by and issued by The Department of Fish and Wildlife. The fee for a fishing contest permit is $24.00 (no more than seven permits will be issued to any one permittee during the calendar year). Effective March 1, 2013, an application fee of $70.00 will be charged for each application submitted (RCW 77.65.480). The $70 application fee will be collected in addition to the fishing contest permit fee and it is non-refundable. Applications for fishing contest permits may be submitted at any time of the year, but they must be received by the department no less than 30 days prior to the start date of the proposed contest. "
For more information see this web site. To be clear, I don't really care if you get the permit or not, but I'd hate to see the organizer(s) get into hot water for not understanding the law. My boat will likely still be in Ilwaco when this takes place and if the weather is good, I'll be fishing tuna. _________________ Roger on Meant to be |

How about we just call it more of a c-brat get together with an emphasis on fishing rather than an official derby to avoid any WDFW violations
I'm not sure about timing but it seems like in years past I start catching bigger fish later in September and early October. The little silvers are the first to arrive. Less humpies later too. We are into it no matter what weekend works, with the exception of August 22 and 23
I don't know if Ill have the juevos to take the c-dory up the Snohomish this year to my holes, its the lowest I've ever seen it. Ill probably be up the river for a few days but in a littler boat. |

Looks like Everett is the home port of choice. Now a date, I agree 3rd or 4th weekend in September is probably a good time. Everyone interested post wich weekend works best and we will pick whichever one that most can attend. If er cannot name any "winner" we shall just have to name a bunch of people losers instead! Once a day or weekend is picked we can look at tides and determine a logical time to meet at the dock. |

I just got off the phone with fish and wild life, here's what i learned. You need a permit for game fish, but salmon are food fish so we do not need a permit. It is not required, but as a courtesy to them they would like a report of what we catch. I got the e mail address of the guy to send info to. We just need to let them know how many fish, species, and area caught. So we are good to go! |

Good for you calling WDFW for clarity. We all could of just hung our heads and gave up with the previous info. |

That's good news! It used to be the derby stuff was in the regs book (which is how I came across it years ago). I read right over the "game fish" bit. |
