Anybody running these. They say if you use these props to drop 3 pitch sizes from what you are using now. I was just wondering how good they are. Sounds like they would be ideal for midrange motor and a heavier boat. Plus they have some kind of a soft shift hub. |

I have not used one of these. The cushioned hub does make less noise and vibration than the standard rubber hub. However, as far as dropping 3 pitch sizes--I would check with someone like Andy at SIMS or Ken at Prop Gods. Generally you change the RPM 200 by each 1" of pitch change. See what the RPM is at WOT currently--you want to be between 5500 and 6000 at WOT, with any prop. _________________ Bob Austin

The only difference in these very pricy Yamaha props [good quality] and anybody else's is the proprietary SDS hub system . The only thing a hub does is transfer the power from the propshaft to the propeller blades with some kind of sacrificial hub in between . The SDS is an anti "clunk" dampening system .
A prop's "blades" have their own set of parameters . pitch, qty blades , rake , and diameter .
There is no correlation between hub type and prop pitch . If the boat runs well now, note the pitch and diameter . Thats likely what you will end up with .

Thats not on Yamahas website that I can find ,Yamaha geneally does not have factory online pricing either .
Sounds like someone trying to generate a phone call to me.
However it does say this ;
Talon (SDS) (Aluminum)
Designed for outboards F70-F115, T50 and T60. Our new Talon – SDS propeller brings our exclusive Shift Dampener System (SDS™) to larger midrange outboards. This creates smooth shifting and quiet, in-gear operation, even at trolling speeds, and is particularly beneficial on smaller, in-line outboards such as those used on pontoon, walleye, fiberglass and deep-V boats
Pitch , blades and diameter ...... = prop size .

"Simyamaha.com is a division of Shipyard Island Marina, Inc".
Do as I suggested and call "Andy" at Shipyard Island Marina, and ask what the situation is. SIM is a legit outfit, and Andy is very helpful.
In the past, most of the SDS hub motors were SS props, and were expensive in comparison.
However, as Marc (who really knows what he is talking about), says, there is something a bit strange, about a prop which claims to be a 12" pitch, and yet runs like a 15" pitch. Actually pitch is not constant in prop blades (that would not work real well, and that is where the concept of cupping and rake comes into play.) This generally would a more aggressive pitch further out in the blade of the prop. 12" thru the water, should be 12" thru the water, but it is more the way the pitch is measured, than reality. |

Here was Andy's reply about the new Yamaha Talon SDS prop. With the aluminum SDS Talon, I have no reason why Yamaha did it this way, but the pitch numbers don't jive. Say you had a standard 13P aluminum prop, and you turned 6000 at wide open throttle. Then you put a 13P Talon on it. Your rpms would be at 5200 in the same conditions. |

There must be a large amount of CUP in the blades to account for the 800 reduction in RPM...
