On the third day of use my motor started to vibrate, stopping and raising the motor showed one of the blades had broken in the middle. I was two miles off shore, but was lucky to have a trolling motor and the original aluminum prop. Found an island with a sandy beach and replaced the damaged prop. Having not hit any thing, and inspection showed on marks on the other blades, I returned the prop. I received a form letter telling me that the other blades showed "scratches and marks". The are correct in that I did pick up some eel grass, but struck nothing more rigid. My last Comprop. The point of this note is to remind boaters' to have a good quality spare prop, and remind myself of what all are parents have told us, "You get what you pay for".

Chica, I posted the same problem a few days ago on a different thread. This is really interesting because after inspecting both of my props, I think it's a stress break that's causing it to fail. I ordered another and installed it today. I also sent the broken one back to Comprop and I should know something in about a week.

I'll try one more time and then try something else if it fails again. It's to bad because I really like how the boat performs with this prop.

If anyone is using this prop, check for stress cracks because I think sooner than later it's going to happen. The last two props I used have lasted approximately 1 1/2 years each.

Jon - I would make you one out of that plastic Permadork material, but they won't let us have stuff from work anymore. Now, if you get twins with little props, I can get 'em in my lunchbox.

Speaking of Permadorks - you still got that thing? If you do, please bring it to Sequim. I might break down and try it on my barge.

It might be the hard water up there that breaks them props. I lost one whole blade off an aluminum after Blakely last year, and I am sure I didn't hit a thing.

I have the permadork sitting by the boat shed. I'll put it in the truck this morning so I don't forget. That thing you made is something else, it convinced me to spend $100 bucks on the factory Peratrim and I'm very glad I did.

I spoke with Comprop this morning about the broken prop I sent back to them. They inspected it and sent me a new one at no charge. I asked if they had an explanation for the failure. She told me once in a while they get a bad batch (composite cure, voids, etc.) but assured me that the return rate is very low. Time will tell. Rolling Eyes

Jon-

Are you using a 15 or a 17 inch pitch Comprop? What's your max RPM and MPH ? Thanks, Joe.

Joe,
The prop is a 15 pitch 4 blade prop and I can turn 5500 rpm at 30 mph.

Jon-

Thanks. Those numbers are about ideal, and the speed very near the max most of us seem to be able to get out of a 90 hp engine. Joe.
