For those with ETEC motors, I thought I'd share a couple of enhancements you can make to your boat that you may not be aware of. Neither of these are critical but they do show some thoughtful engineering by Evinrude.

The first is to move you fuel/water separator under you engine cowling. Envinrude makes a kit (example) that installs easily and includes a sensor to alarm if water is detected in the fuel. It a nice way to clean up your fuel system.

The second is an Auxiliary Battery Charging kit. Being a high torque motor, ETECs tend to have massive charging output. This kit allows you to add a dedicated charging circuit to attach to your house batteries. Why would you want to do that? Because it allows you to completely separate the engine start battery from the house batteries. No need for an ACR or equivalent because the banks are separate. And using this with the Blue Sea On/Off/Combine switch still allows for emergency combining. See discussion here.

The Evinrude uses a magneto for charging. They are used on airplanes so they are reliable and maintenance free. No belts to break and no brushes to wear out. If I was ordering a new CD22 and did a lot of anchoring out I think I would get the Etec115 just for the charging capacity if nothing else.

I just bought a 1979 John Deere tractor. A few days later I discovered it wasn't charging. Went online for the test procedures and discovered the magneto and rectifier/regulator were working fine. The problem was in the ignition switch(simple and cheap fix).

Regards, Rob

Just checked out the new Evinrude G2 outboard in the last issue of Power Boating Canada. Pretty neat stuff!! From the glitz - colour coded to your boat(400 combinations available). To the guts - incredible advances in torque, fuel economy and emissions. Hydraulic steering built in to the mid section. Drive by wire - no cables from the helm. Automatically trims itself as you drive. 5 year warranty with no dealer maintenance for 5 years or 500 hrs.

A bit big for most CD's - 200 - 300hp but some builders are going to be re-designing their transom/motorwell just for this outboard.

Yeah, I really like the drive-by-wire and long service intervals. Didn't I read that you can actually check and change the lower unit oil from under the cowling?

It seems like Evinrude has really come up with fresh ideas for the outboard market. Hopefully someday they'll scale it down to the 115-150 HP models!

Wish they both fit the 90 but I don't think they do.

That is correct. Apparently you can not only check the level but also view the fluid in a reservoir and see any contaminants(water, etc.). I would take that to mean that it must circulate from the lower unit to the reservoir. This would be good if you suspected water intrusion into the lower unit. I have a 1980 Merc 50 that has been plagued over the years with water in the lower unit. I never know until I drop the fluid in the fall whether or not I fixed the problem.
