If you're interested in a camper canvas outfit, I may have a deal for you.
On Thursday (9/29) we travel back to Washington to deliver Naknek, our CD22, for new canvas. The boat (and "old" canvas) is already in Anacortes, WA.
...but that will leave us with an "extra" camper canvas outfit (made in 2004, and complete with upgraded windows, screens, stainless tubing and fittings) that we will no longer need. (It's a long story - and I needn't share it here.)
You can see a couple of pictures of the (cadet gray) canvas on our photo page, or contact me directly for additional information.

So, what changes are you going to make on your new canvas? And where are you having it done?
I plan on having canvas made down the road and have always thought that I would have it made with the back enclosing the lazarettes like your old canvas. My only concern is that the lazarettes on my boat are hinged on the outer edge, so the canvas may interfere with them when opened.
Since you have experience with canvas covering the lazarettes, do you have any advice on how you would do it any different?
Thanks,
Corwin |

Like the first set of canvas, the new stuff will go aft to enclose the lazarettes. The big difference will be the "fit" of the new stuff. Enclosing the lazarettes permits them to stay dry, which is nice. (On your boat, having lids versus hatch covers, they may be drier already, I don't know.)
As mentioned, the main change will be the overall fitting on the canvas and aft curtain. Our curtain is one large piece (rather unmanageable to say the least). The new aft curtainS (I think there will be about four/five panels as I recall). It sounds like it would have been simpler to refit the existing canvas - believe me, I thought of that.... All things considered, it just wasn't enough as there are some other places where the fit didn't measure-up (no pun intended).
Another feature that we'll have on the new canvas (like the old) is that the aft curtain will drop to approximately the middle of the splash well (forward of the engine) rather than drop to the cockpit side of the splashwell bulkhead. Doing this gives a nice weather proof storage space in the splashwell, but doesn't interfer with raising the motor [except in the extreme raised position).
I don't think that your lazarette lids would present a problem. As I recall, they open "outward" and there should be plenty of room.
One of the reasons we chose to enclose so much space is that Sandy is reasonably claustrophobic, and having a large/airy space really helps. As it is, we found that having the choice of windows or screens REALLY increased our living space on the boat. With the windows in place it was like having a sunroom on the back of the boat and we found that we preferred to sit "outside" (versus the booth) for morning coffee and evening 'Sundowners." Really delightful. An added benefit seems to be that we almost always left the cabin door open which greatly adds to air volume and flow; we simply have not had ANY problem with condensation.
The new canvas will be done by Rick and Bob at Canvas Riggers in Oak Harbor, WA (Tel: 360-672-4417); retired Navy canvas riggers. I've seen several examples of their work, and it is absolutely top notch. I'm sure that as time goes on, other's will make improvements and modifications to C-Dory canvas (that's the nature of progress...) but for the time being, I think they are the one's pushing the progress envelope. Besides, they've got Les sort of Dutch Uncle'ing their developments (Les used to to canvas...), and amongst the three of them they've come up with some really good ideas.
Stay Tuned...

We spent two days tied up next to Naknek at Cap Sante after the Blakley gathering. The quality of their canvas top was very good. In fact, if we had not just picked up out own new top, I would be interested in buying it myself.
I also checked into Canvas Riggers before going with King Marine for our top. Canvas Riggers was signficantly more expensive and had a four month wait. We had a custom top made at King and a few things did not turn out as I had hoped. But Dave at King worked out the bugs and now we are very satisfied. _________________ Terry, Ann & Chloe
