We were looking into installing a roof-mounted air conditioner on our marinate this year, and determined that there were no viable options on the market -- only ones of 100+ pounds in the 12,000+ but range such as offered by Dometic and Coleman. We did not want to throw off the center of gravity for our boat by installing such a heavy air conditioner. we did not want to deal with the ugly looks of these bulky units, and we did not like the idea of installing a heavy amperage electrical service. Nor did we want to take up valuable space in the interior with other options. So, our solution was to hang a low amperage (< 7 amps), 5,000 but Ge window air conditioner out our port side window. This air conditioner is very light (less than 40 pounds) and compact. So we store it under our berth when not using it. We made a portable rack to hang over the window, with two cargo carrier straps that clip onto the exterior hand rail. The air conditioner sits on a pan that captures the condensate when the boat lists to starboard. We are very pleased with this arrangement, because 5,000 btu's are all that are necessary for our Marinaut (the boat's Mascoat Delta-T insulation probably helps us to a certain degree as an insulator.) On the exterior, we made a 3/8" plywood board with an inner rubber weather strips that fits over the unit and overlaps the wind, which prevents water and insect intrusion. The whole set-up process takes 5-7 minutes, and is well worth the effort.

In the Northeast, we only need air conditioning for a few weeks out of the year, so this set-up is right for us, and we have used it in the month's of July and August to our great delight. I would show updated pictures of our set up, but over the last few month's, this website's software has not been working well with the Apple Mac environment. I don't know if other people are experiencing similar issues: can't delete folders, can't edit folder names, can't add new photos to an existing folder, and etc. This has prevented me from adding new photos, so as of this time going forward, I will no longer be posting any photos on this website.

Ah! -- I neglected to mention that we exclusively use shore power. So our set up may not be ideal for those in different situations or climates.
