Well, many of us have followed Sam's adventures on his 22 footer, Retriever. He's now living the dream full time aboard a 37 foot Nordic tug. This Spring he will lead a flotilla from Anacortes to Ketchican. Read about it here..

Good luck and congratulations Sam, we all wish you the best. _________________ MartyP

Thanks Marty. Living aboard has been a great experience.
I'm leaving on Monday for a 3-4 week Puget Sound and San Juan Islands cruise to update the Waggoner Guide. The blog should get more interesting as I do more cruising!
I installed AIS on the new boat: http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/367595070 I'll be changing the name at some point, but the MMSI number will stay the same so that link will still work.
Hoping to make it to Friday Harbor...I think I'll be able to. Not sure if I'll bring the Nordic or the C-Dory.
If any of you see me cruising, don't be strangers. _________________ My boating blog...http://samlandsman.blogspot.com/ |

We always enjoy following your adventures, Sam! We'll be at Friday Harbor in the newly refurbished Daydream. Jesse at Bitter End Boatworks is a magician by me, the exterior looks as good as the day the boat left the factory, and I have been hard at work on the interior stuff. Bring the Nordic to Friday Harbor! Love to give it a look-see! _________________

Hi Sam,
Congrats. Will be watching for your AIS. Will the boat name change on the AIS tag, or just on the blog and heading? Curious which AIS. SleepyC is in the shop now for a Vesper Watchmate install. After last summer/fall in the fog and traffic it seemed a prudent choice.
By the way, Nice job on the 2014 Waggoners, Found several C-Dory pix there, including Retriever.

Sam's ongoing blog of his leading this very diverse group of boats ranging from a 22 foot C-Dory to a 58 foot yacht makes for some very interesting reading & photo viewing. I have also been following the group on SPOT. JoLee & I, along with George & Carolyn met the group at Nanaimo with some fun time shared aboard his Nordic Tug the evening before their crossing of Georgia Strait.

I read the day-by-day on Sam's blog...to tell the truth, it seems like Sam is part baby-sitter for these folks. C-Dory folks are probably more self-reliant, and would more than likely not pay for a guide, although Sam is certainly as good as it gets. David and I made the trip from Anacortes (David) or Blaine (Pat) to Ketchikan in 2006. We ran the first day to Gorge Harbor, the second day to Sullivan Bay, and then the third day we were around Cape Caution and anchored up at Calvert Island. We were less concerned about conditions than Sam's folks are, although we were probably just dumb and lucky. We did not go through Dodd Narrows because we ran up the mainland side, but we do not wait for slack at Dodd Narrows, and anybody with a C-Dory can transit it at just about any time. Yaculta is a different story, but we did not go through there on our way up. A great trip, I can hardly wait to do it again, although Patty is not quite so anxious...she wants azure blue waters! I am not ready to boat in Mexico however, and so far, Florida is just too far away for both of us! |

Arrived in Ketchikan this morning. Will update blog tomorrow. Bottom line: 6 boats plus me (everyone we started with) made it safely to Ketchikan on time.
I burned 218 gallons of diesel (including generator and furnace) in 758 nautical miles and 107 engine hours. I had 153 gallons in the tank when I arrived in Ketchikan. Not buying fuel in Canada saved a bundle of money...total fuel cost was $865. |

Congrats on all your adventures, people look back and say I should have done this or that, seems like your off to a good start on not sitting back, and instead jumping in and doing things, thats a big step up from 22 c-dory to trawler. |

I"m enjoying it too - really glad you take the time to keep up the blog
Even though I'm not much of a "joiner," typically, I think a trip led by you would be fabulous! I can think of any number of reasons someone would go in a heartbeat, whether they "needed to" or not.
Only irritating thing is.... would you quit making the NT 37 sound so good? |

Sam made is way into a favorite spot of us both "Red Bluff Bay". Envy is usually not one of my faults, but I'm overloaded on it today. What makes me feel better is knowing Sam is enjoying it every bit as much as I would be.

I'll second that Red Bluff bay--and good shrimping near the entrance, lots of bears, wildlife and scenery superb! I know he enjoys it as much as the rest of us--except he is getting paid for this! Go SAM. _________________ Bob Austin
