Point of clarification to my post about how to construct a bridle: The bridle consists of two arms with eyes at both ends. On end goes to the towing boats cleat, sampson post, whatever, and the other to a shackle (not a thimble, as I previously said). Both arms of the bridle and the eye end of the tow line are joined by the shackle. Since this arrangement is weighted, it's important to keep a close eye on it when retrieving it. Crew teamwork becomes important, with the coxwain positioning the boat so the line is hauled in over the stern quarter, not directly over the outboard(s). Polypropolyne is not used because of lesser strength and quicker deterioration. It also does not have the stretch/shock lessening properties of nylon.

No pulley or sliding devices are used on the bridles, other than a snatch block sometimes to facilitate shortening or lengthening the tow.

Now if RedFox and his Yammi or Dan and his Suckzuki were out there that's a different story. Best you learn how to do this in case they come to visit... Laughing

A guy really has to stay on top of this outfit. I miss reading a post or two and next thing ya know....

Hey you don't need to prepare for towing me. After reading all the complaints on here I started calling my precious Suzy a Suckzuki and I also now carry bridle, hauser, shackles, etc. for the day that is surely coming when I will need a tow. I'm well schooled in towing but in case the vessel rendering assistance doesn't trust me I carry a copy of Chapman's so they can brush up a bit before they hook up to me and commence dragging.

Oh, Mike. I think a thimble is a unit of measure, like "a thimble of scotch".

By the way, if you really want to be prepared to tow effectively, you would need to carry a spare prop of specific diameter and pitch to.... Disgust oh shi.... Crook Sorry about that Embarrased And I was doing so good. Gotta go give my sponsor a call guys.

Later.
