“All is Lost,” a low-budget sailing movie starring Robert Redford, is now available on Pay Per view. It came out in November. It has received good reviews. Redford is soloing a Cal 39 through the Indian Ocean when all the things you imagine going wrong on a boat start going wrong, and keep going wrong. It’s being praised by the professional movie critics as “a triumph,” “a surprisingly successful stunt” and “one of the best movies of the year.”
But what do sailors think? We enjoyed it. I did want to yell at the screen a few times. If I ever wake up in a crunched hull in the middle of the Indian Ocean with water flooding in, guess I might make a few mistakes too. Here is a link to the trailer.

My biggest take away in his circumstance was to have a well equipped ditch bag. Not to give away too much, there were some items that we all know to have, he did not and paid a price for the over-site.

I personally think it is one of the most idiotic movies that I have ever seen. Redford is a hazard to navigation. Hitting the container is, of course, unavoidable. But from that time on, he blunders from one bad decision to the next. I don't think he could pilot an air mattress across a wading pool. This is, of course, my personal opinion. I loved him in Jeremiah Johnson.

A more correct statement is "...the character Redford plays is a hazard to navigation...", unless of course you know him personally. For all we know, Robert Redford is perfectly capable sailor and can get an air mattress across a pool.

Have not seen it yet. My all time favorite movie period is Captian Ron. I hate repeats but I watch this at least twice a year and enjoy everythime.

I thought the movie was just ok. No trouble learning lines, the only one I heard was a f bomb. My wife who loves Robert Redford hated the movie. I could not figure out the ending was he actually rescued? Maybe I fell asleep. I thought him floating backwards downward into the abyss that it was a long shot at best swimming all the way back up to the surface. I guess they wanted a happy ending. To bad Barbara Streisand was not along then you would have heard some bitchin.
Very Happy

I saw it not a bad movie on a winter day. Cant comment on how accurate it was as far as sailing goes, have never sailed but would like to someday.

CAPTAIN RON is also my favorite. The last time I saw it was in the cockpit of my sailboat, in Antiqua, with 6 great cruisers invited from the rest of the anchorage, TV on the hatch. Rum, moonlight, and madness.

Good movie, for those who don't know sailing, or safety, and much in the way of survival preparation or technique. I thought it had a fairly strange ending.

The Guardian was one of my favorites. Also, Wind was good.
