Some places don't sell block anymore. We could only get party ice.

You've hit on a sore point with me. The virtually complete lack of real block ice available in the U.S. anymore (I'm sure some places must still have it, but they are few and far between in my experience). If you are "lucky" you find what I call "fake blocks," which are blocks comprised of a bunch of cubes frozen together to make a square shape. They still last better than bags of cubes, but nothing like real blocks.

I have a great recipe for making block ice at home if you want it.

There is a terry cloth towel we keep wet and over the ice chest. The foil/foam is over that. The terry cloth acts as an evaporative cooler also.

That does work well in a dry climate. I used a wetted terry cloth towel over the cooler but like your addition of the reflective foam on top. I've also seen where people have a piece of that reflective foam inside the top of the cooler - that way you open the lid and the foam is still there; then you can just reach in under the foam to grab what you want. That would also work well in a humid climate.

But back to the towel: I don't have a freezer aboard, so I used a little water in the bottom of a bucket and then a wet towel draped over jugs of water in it to "pre-cool" them before putting them in the cooler for iced tea. I used the IR thermometer and could see they got about 20º cooler that way vs. just taking water from the tank, filling a jug, and putting it in the cooler straight away.

Fill an empty, plastic, one gallon milk jug with water. Leave a little space at the top. Or not. Freeze. Skim milk jugs work better than whole milk jugs.

I did try opening an Engel [make that "Yeti"] at Cabela's last month and felt like I was not sure I'd want to bother with the latches just to grab a quick drink, etc. (but maybe you can just firmly push it closed and not latch the two latches every time - they were two rubber "T" sort of like a Jeep hood). I would want to try the Engel "everyday opening handiness" too before buying one.

Oops, I mis-typed. It was a Yeti I tried out at Cabela's. I have not looked at the Engel lid/latch yet.

We have a 35 qt. Yeti and a Igloo 60 qt cooler. The Yeti will freeze milk when using dry ice, so we have to be careful when loading. The Igloo is about worthless and won't keep a bag of ice of more than a day during the summer travels. We have been researching a replacement for the Igloo and are looking for something that works as good as the Yeti without paying a kings ransom.

I'd say the Coleman Extreme is the closest thing to meeting that requirement. Not quite as good as the Yeti at keeping ice forever but not too bad and not too expensive.

Anyone understand the concept of using rock or ice cream salt in a cooler to lower the temperature? Saw someone do it and the beer was half way frozen within an hour of putting it in the yeti.

The same principle as used to make ice cream in the old hand crank machines. The rock salt is added to the slush--the temperature of the slush is below the freezing point of ice cream--or fresh water. As ice melts there are 79 calories per gram of ice melted released. This lowers the temperature of the salt water below 32 degrees. The more salt, the lower the temperature of the water, without freezing. The ice (non salt containing) melts, and calories are released to take the salt water to a lower temperature. Frosty.

FYI. If you want an easy way to keep track of your coolers internal temperature, this works. I use the out door transmitter for a home dual thermometer set. The out door side reads the cooler internal temp; the indoor side read the boat cabin temp. It is all part of my on board weather center.

You're welcome,

Harvey
