We purchased a Honda 9.9 Electric Start No Manual Choke 6/23/2010.
From day one this kicker was difficult to start and 7/24/2012 while on Lake Ouchita it would not start at all.
Back home it would start by holding a shop towel over the carburetor intake because it has no manual choke. The kicker is now at the Texarkana, TX dealer for warranty repair.
Our Honda 75 performs like a dream and is quiet as a mouse. _________________ Bill and Brenda Russell

Bill,
On my Honda 15, I set the idle up just a tad. That worked fine. _________________ "And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." - Abraham Lincoln |

Oops, edit timed out. The 15 is very similar to your 9.9. My problem was that it would start, then not keep running. Setting the idle up fixed that issue. |

Had the same prob with stalling at very low idle. Turned out that the impeller needed changing, with overheat at low rpms initiating overheat sensor shutting down the motor. At higher speeds, more water would cool the engine enough to not allow overheat. Ron |

Doesn't sound like either one of their engines will run long enough (or even start) to overheat, sounds like a different problem... Automatic choke or idle set too low....

Charlie, it was low idle on my 15. On the original post about the BH 8, I suspect the plug, but will get it out to the pond to be sure. I blew out my back yesterday (thank goodness for Vicodin and Flexoril), so it may be a bit before I do that. |

New carburetor and $200.00 solved the problem. Dealer said ethanol caused the hard starting problem. |

Bill and Brenda,
Just to make sure that it doesn't happen again, remember to drain the gasoline out of the carb after using it. Use the drain screw at the bottom of the carb.
The problem is that this model of Honda uses an enrichment valve, instead of a choke. This consists of a long tube with a small valve at the top, and it gets plugged up with crud after the motor sits and the gas evaporates. As I mentioned above, it happened to me. Cleaned that tube and it now start easily.
