Had a great time: nice facility (tho' Sat. night was a bit bumpy in the slip), fun run to Beaufort, and pleasant company the whole time.
Thanks to Gene and Carrie for joining us and answering lots of boat questions, to Bill and others for help at the ramp, and especially to Erma and Ernie for making the event happen.
Hope to see some of you on the James and at future events.
P.S. Anybody seen my boat hook? _________________ Lou S.

Erma, Thanks, We enjoyed it. Next time we will be there as well. Our adventure back! I did not load the boat on the trailer right. I broke the bow strap just to move the boat forward one inch. I did have two more straps that I used.I only drove aboutr 35 to 40 back to Norfolk VA. It was a 6 hour trip. One tank of gas. _________________ Neal Mitchell |

Erma and the rest of the gang,
I am sorry I missed the 6th NC C-Dory Gathering, I had all the best intentions,
It had been 7 yrs since I was a boat captain. My Friend Bill and Best buddy Teddy raced down to Beaufort Wildlife boat launch. When we put the boat in the water the cabin floor was wet. I looked at the stern and it looked so low in the water I thought the boat was sinking. Water was coming in the transom outlet out scuppers. I thought we were sinking. I must have over filled the water tank and it over flowed into the cabin.
It started out as an anxiety attack.
The boat was stern heavy, Both fuel tanks were full, I had an aux 14gal fuel tank, 6 gallon generator fuel tank, and 14 gallon BIG Kauhna shower tank all in the cockpit.
This was the first time out in 7 yrs and the combination of all the above and having my dog in aboard 10 days after surgery really made me tense.
I felt I lost all my confidence and was so afaid of running aground after 11 yrs of a 5 ft draft sailboat the I was a mess.
We were in such a hurry to make the gathering that everything we packed was just thrown in bags and I couldn't find anything when I needed it.
I started to think ."What am I doing here? I could be home safe and sound drinking a beer on my deck.
I t just got worse the first day. I won't elaborate.
The boat traffic was intense and I just wanted to head to the open ocean where I didn't have to worry about running aground or hitting another boat.
What a difference a day makes.
After anchoring off Town Creek Marina, we headed out into the Atlantic and I started to remember why I spent 11 yrs on the Sea.
It just got better and better. The C-dory proved she could handle chop and I took her 5 miles offshore.
It took 3 times a day to get my best buddy teddy to land so she could do her pee pee's and poos.
We caught Spanish, Blues, shark, Sea Bass( we had to throw them back season is closed in NC) and had fish for dinner every night.
By the 3rd day I trusted the C-dory all the way and felt safe at all times.
At 4200 RPMs she cruised @ 16 MPH in a 2-4 foot sea in the ocean.
At one point coming into the Beaufort Inlet the Chop was crisscrossing like crazy from all the boat traffic and the waves were 3 to 4 feet smashing each other.
I hit the throttle and the 90hp Yamaha got the boat up on a plane at about 23mph and we just glided over the mess.
I really love the boat. I can't wait to go back.
I have to wait for another year to make the 7th anual gathering but God willing I will be there.
I named my C-Dory
RESILIENT
Best wishes to all and I loved the photos. |

Lanlocked,
Wow what an adventure. Your story was great. My husband and I have had our boat a little over two years. The first trip out for us was the week-end of the 5th annual gathering. We are still getting comfortable with our boat. I hope we will see you out on our local waters in the near future. Give Teddy a head rub for us.

Well folks, I tried to load the photos last night from our event, but by looking at the folder this morning, I note that the folder is empty.
I had about 30 photos to load, so I tested a folder by adding 5 photos successfully. I deleted the test folder and then tried to load all of the photos, but the system must have an issue with too many photos in the same folder. On my next try, I'll make several folders and hopefully that will work. _________________ Steve Baum

Hi NC C-Brats.
Thanks to all the C-brats that offered good advice, tips & etc to a couple of lost cruisers at the gathering. Our goal was to pick your brains and then do some cruising. It worked great.
We had intended to leave for Orcacoke on Monday, but there was an east wind which we had been told created a problem, so we waited until Tuesday. Had a great 3.5 hr run out and spent 3 days on the island. Rented bikes & ate seafood and had a good time.
On Friday we left and headed up the Pamlico River, stopped at Bath for an hour or so, then on to Washington. Arrived on Friday night, just as they got the High School Homecoming parade under way. We hung around and enjoyed that. Then the dock master found us and gave us a free berth for two days. The next day was the Saturday market and across the street was a Quilt Show, so Penny was quite happy. Later in the day we did the Esuarium and really enjoyed that. By then it was raining so we ate a big meal in "Down on Mainsteet". Penny ordered the Shrimp and Steak Kabob and thinks it was one of her top ten all time meals.
We left on Sunday and took our time going down the Pamlico River, across the Waterway to the Neuse side and then headed up South River. We anchored behind a point at a fork near the head of the river. Lots of birds but no people in sight. Great quite night. Monday we headed back to Whittker Point which took a while with the wind blowing up the River.
We had planned to load Two Bears on the trailer Tuesday, but it was raining, and why get wet? So we hung aroundthe marina for another day. Great folks.
We did load and leave Wednesday morning, drove north to Elizabeth City, launched and tied up at the City Docks. We were the 5th boat, so they held the "RoseBud" reception and we got a bit of goodies. We hung around Eliz City the next day doing banking, but mostly visiting the Museum of the Abemarle. Great displays and coverage.
Thursday we headed up the Dismal Swamp Canal at 5.4 kts. Took a while but we began to see all kinds of stuff, mostly turtles. We really enjoyed the floating algae that covers the river.
The dock at the visitor center was full, so the park people let us tie to the floating dock on the north side of the swing bridge. In the morning we got some great photos of mist through the trees. We headed back this morning, again at slow speed. On the way a black bear swam across in front of us, a cottonmouth swam through the green algae, and a squirrel missed his mark and fell into the canal just ahead of us. He swam like crazy to a bush with a limb in the water and climbed up on that. Back in Liz City by 3 PM, we loaded Two Bears and headed down the road. We're in a campground tonight (showers!) and will be headed south out of the state tomorrow. It was a great visit. Thanks for all your help and ideas. We enjoy meeting new boaters. _________________ Chuck & Penny Raddon
