Oportunity to buy a 22' 1984 C-Dory---Need advice....

Hello folks! I have the oportunity to buy a 22' 1984 Angler for about 12k. It is basically a boat and engine. A good engine though, 90hp 2001 Johnson. Nothing really comes with it though, the electronics are old and probably unreliable. The hull is in good shape and comes on an ez-load trailer. I am just wondering if this is a good price. Also, I am wondering whats under the seats in the bow, is that hollow under there? Has anyone ever converted that space to water tanks or extra storage? I am sure there is a structural reason for it. Also, I plan to tow this thing with a Toyota T100, am I going to scare myself? Please let me know what you think.

5 years ago I paid 12500.00 for the Sensei. it is a 1983 angler clasic and it had a Evinrude 65 hp & 15 Johnson kicker. it was on a 1983 single axel trailer with no brakes. since then both motors have met with evil spirits and have been replaced.Also the trailer has been replaced with a tandem axel with disc brakes.
The one thing I would have seriously checked out is the transom. make sure it is solid. I am in need of a new transom on the Sensei.Yhe plywood has had water in throug some screw holes the previous owner had put without any sealant.
I would certainly feel that this boat is right in the ballpark as far as price goes.
What fuel tanks does it have? another thing to look at are the strips on the underside of the hull.make sure they are sound.
you should not have a problem with the T100.is it a 4x4? that would be a plus if it is. specialy when launching on some of the steeper launch sites.

Welcome to the C-Dory "Pub".
As Adeline said, a member, Greg, has a 22' angler about that vintage. Look for his photo album "Redfox". His boat is also featured on the new C-Dory catalog. He has done some amazing thing with his boat, including a water tank in the bow. As for the value, it sounds like a good price. I'm sure others will jump in here with more experience.

CG; sounds fair enough to me! Back in 96 we gave 13K for RedFox, with junk everything except the galvanized single-axle EZ-Loader. Hull was sound as can be besides a couple areas worn through the glass from the trailer bunk carriage bolts coming loose (better watch that kinda thing) Wink

A great modification awaits under the V-Berth area for you. I'm not sure if the old photos are on my site anymore or not, but they are explicit for details about doing the glass-work to install stuff like that. I went overkill on mine, you don't have to go all-out as I did Neutral

If that engine is tight and all, this is a very good deal, considering the cost of EVERYTHING constantly going up and up anymore Disgust

The T-100 will be great, power-to-spare Thumbs Up

for the package! You'd do fine with Taco (Tacoma) as well.

OH... I think maybe the runners on the hull are glassed-in like on the 1985s. I don't know what year they are bonded, I think maybe by what Roger has, they may be part of the hull by 84? Pretty sure... Neutral

Wow I'd say that $12,500 is an awesome price. I'd say the boat is worth $10,000 w/o a motor and figure the value of the motor, electronics, and trailer to that. 2001 Johnson with reasonable use I'd say is worth every bit of $2,500 and even if you replace the electronics your not going to be out that much. Basic electronics package with GPS, VHF, and Depth Sounder I'd guess to be around $1,000. You can figure between $1,500 and $2,500 for a new trailer if thats needed. As others have said the condition of the glass is probly the most important thing to consider when buying a more "seasoned" vessel. Good luck hope you've found a gem. BTW I pull my boat with a F150 and I'm sure a Ford Ranger would be enough but how far your towing and what kind of road/passes/hills your traveling on would be my only concern.

I paid $13K for C-Farer last October. She is an '83 Angler. She came with a 70 Hp Suzuki 4-stroke and a 15 Hp Suzuki 4-stroke kicker. She had a working depth finder and a VHF. There is an older EZ loader single-axle trailer that carries her around. I felt lucky to get the boat before one of the several other serious buyers snatched it up.

Camelguy - I bought my '81 Angler with similar equipment 6 years ago for $6,000, but the engine was still the original 1983 Johnson. I've since repowered and replaced almost everything else. Knock on wood, but I think I finally have everything where I want it - Relatively new 4-stroke main and kicker, bottom paint, GPS chartplotter, hydraulic steering, autopilot, radar, radar arch, trollmaster, yada, yada.

If you really wanted all that stuff and could actually find a fully-rigged boat with a newer 4-stroke engine, you might be better off paying a lot more for it (like 20 to 25K). I shouldn't think about it, but I went back and totaled all this stuff up, and even starting at 6K, I'm up to just under 20K.

On the other hand, if it's got a solid hull and strong engine, 12K probably isn't bad, especially since these rarely come up. At the end of the day, you wind up with a boat that's has all the basic attractions of the new C-Dory's they build today for about 1/2 the cost.

Also, I tow with a T100 4WD also, and it works fine.

Jim F. Since Pescadory is an 81 , which hull number is it? I remember that Hunky Dory up here was hull #7 I think, was just curious...

If you want a C-Dory and it is still available you best jump on it for that price. I had 5 deals slip through my hands before I finally got my Sea Lion. As it turns out I was barely ahead of 2 other guys that day.
It sure is frustrating to finally make up your mind and loosing out by just an hour or so.

I paid $21500 for my 95 Angler and have since replaced the electronics, main engine and rebuild most of the trailer. As you can gather from this post and the ones above it the hull is not the issue. Do give it a through going over and if you like have a Marine Survey done. I kind of wish I had done this on mine as I might have gotten a concession on the main engine (maybe not as the compression was ok). It will give you peace of mind if nothing else. You can make an offer contingent upon passing an inspection and satisfactory sea trial to at least give you time to be sure you want it. To find one of these boats for that price is rare and becoming downright scarce. Good luck and welcome to the pub.

I paid $11,100 for mine on the trailer, no engines, kicker bracket all brand new at the factory in Kent summer of 1983. Hull No. 155. Drove down and towed it back up here and installed a 115 Johnson that I already had. Wore it out and replaced it in 1997 with a 90 hp Honda. What a giant improvement that was.
It uses 1/3 the fuel and pushes the boat better.

As far as checking your transom...there is a densometer that marine surveyors use to check for wood rot behind fiberglass. It may be worth the effort and cost. Also check the deck where the motor well attaches to it. That is a place the older models seemed to fail if worked too hard.
