I was looking for directions on how to make the 60 degree stainless brackets and 1 inch SS tubing from west marine work, rather than getting a custom one fabricated. I think all that is needed are some nylon shims like the ones in the photo above.

A pice of SS pipe and two standard bimini ends will make about any angle you need . West Marine should have what you need.
2 of these
And two of these
and a chunk of appropriatly sized stainless tubing in between will do the job. And its removable .
Marc

Hi,

I designed the original transom safety bar and had them made at Brooks Marine Fabrication in Anacortes (along with the radar arches I also designed). They were popular (we did them in almost every CD22) and the factory wanted to get them as well (Brooks is a small one-person operation) so we had Railmakers in Everett do them.

I don't know if they're still being made or not.

Les

How/where doe the original bar fit on the boat? If I can make a decent rig with the stainless brackets and tubing, I would be happy. Otherwise ordering etc from the US could be expensive.

Mike_J,

Maybe this image will help. This is where our transom bar was before I removed and installed a cooler rack.

I also agree with Marc on the use of those bimini ss parts. They give you flexibility with adapting to angles. I also used those for our dinghy bracket, also since removed. Very Happy

Peter, where do you keep your downrigger balls? I have my downrigger's mounted as yours, but have not yet figured out where to keep the balls.

Mile, I actually keep the DR balls on the shelf under the gunnels. I have those plastic dr ball holders sitting on the shelf. It is not screwed down as I remove the Dr balls when we're on cruising only trips.

Many people screw down the holders directly behind the lazarettes. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I had seen the Scotty ball holders mounted behind the lazarette and was trying to decide if they would be in the way..

Stainless steel schedule 40 from a pipe wholesaler, stainless steel plating, and a local welder would the the cheaper than "West Marine". At least around my area.

Or you could get the Scotty hooks for your downrigger and keep them ready for use at any time. During the winter when not fishing I keep them in the ball holder in the cabin storage.

As Marc mentioned, our SS bars in the well of the 25 were made from 1" SS tubing and standard Bimini fittings. Not expensive.

I finally got my transom bar done and have posted some pics in my album: http://www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_albumName=transombar&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php
I have forgotten how to insert images from an album...

I ended up buying some 1 inch SS bar and some bimini ends from west marine - total cost including bolts etc was under $150 CDN.
Worked well for fishing last Sunday, and I am planning on making a second bar further forward so that I can make a platform if I need it. The current location was great for fishing.
I like the fact that the whole thing is easy to remove.
I put a washer in the bimini joint to make it less wiggly. This photo shows the details:
http://www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_albumName=transombar&id=IMGP3403&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_photo.php

I also mounted some downrigger ball holders near the stern - again worked out well for salmon fishing this past weekend. Photo at: http://www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_albumName=Natural-C-lection&id=IMGP3404&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_photo.php
