Hello all:

Just bought a 1985 22' C-Dory. I think it is the Angler model but not sure how one can tell. Anyway, it is a closed cabin, no settee or stove, just shelving and storage. The previous owner tells me he tried a 90-HP motor on it but simply could not optimize the power and speed because there is seldom water here in the Gulf of Georgia flat enough that it didn't pound him to death. So he downsized to a new 50-HP Yamaha 4-stroke and that's what came with it when I bought 'er. Anyone else out there using a 50-hp?? What is your experience?

I ran it around the harbor only once--it gets up on the step just fine, seems to do about 15 kts although I have no speed-o. My first impression was that it slaps the water big-time when one hits a chop or a wake. Hmmm. I installed a trim-tab kit that was in my possession thinking this might help in a chop but haven't tried it out yet. Anyone got any experience with trim-tabs?

Granite carver: Welcome to the group.
The main difference betweeen the angler and the cruiser is that the angler has a shorter cabin and a correspondingly longer cockpit. From the interior description, sounds like an angler. 50Hp on a 22 footer is undersized. Most have either twin 40's, or a single 90 (there are some exceptions, single 75's twin 45's and even 50's).

While I do not have trim tabs, there's a huge set of postings on using them on these boats and on how keeping the bow down improves the pounding problem quite a bit. I can do this to some extent by keeping the engines tilted fully down but wish I had trim tabs. I asked about them on purchase but was assured by someone (who no longer works at the factory) that they were not needed. After reading on this site, I wish I had them installed on purchase.

The easiest way to find info on this site from previous postings is to use the search function - do a search on "trim tabs" and you'll be rewarded with a many discussions on the topic.

Flat bottom boats are indeed "hull slappers." A major CON if you want high speed all the time. On the other hand a major PRO is they're very fuel efficient as they're not pushing water aside all the time and have low hull friction on a plane.

I have a Honda 50 on my much smaller, lighter C-Dory 16 Cruiser and would install a Honda 90 on a 22 footer based on this experience. I've seen no reason to exclude Yamaha from your engine choice however and you can probably get a better trade Yamaha-to-Yamaha. The 75s are the same chassis and block -- and weight. The 90s produce more torque.

Two-strokes have made great advances (I suspect due to the competition from the wonderful four-strokes) and are still simplier to maintain other than having a supply of 2-stroke oil around.

A supply of oil around? No, No, Chuck.

For the E-Tec you fill the little tank once a season -- and no crankcase to drain and change Laughing -- different ball game now.

I have a 1985 Angler with a 90 HP Johnson two stoke. Criuse at 18 - 22 mph and get 2.2 mpg. Will hit over 30 mph, only done that once. A 75 HP should do fine, but a 50 is to small for big water.

I have an 1981 22' C-Dory and I believe the change in hauls was posted on another thread, 1987 I think. The difference is quite noticable if you compare. I however havent had the oppurtunity to ride in a 1987 or newer C-Dory. Weight distribution and trim seem to be the most important factors in how my boat rides through chop. I'd recommend doing some experiments putting some weight in the V-berth and seeing if that improves your ride. I dont have trim tabs but wish at times I did, only to correct listing from unequal weight from passenger movement. If you are happy with the motor, 16knots of speed seems acceptable to me most people dont operate much over 20knots in these boats except on the most calmest waters. Another cosideration is on another thread there is a product called permatrim that attaches to your outboard for additional trim. I'd go the inexpensive route before considering dropping $7000-8000 on a new motor. Good Luck!

THE BOAT YOU PURCHASED IS THE ONE I WAS LOOKING AT IN FRENCH CREEK MARINA.

I LIKED IT AND MADE AN OFFER OF 20 K........BUT THE SALESMAN WAS NOT ALL THAT FRIENDLY...."Surprised)

I EXPLAINED TO HIM THAT A 50 ON A 22 WOULD NOT DO.......ACTUALLY.....I TOLD HIM IT WAS UNDERPOWERED.

I DID FINALLY FIND A 1982 ANGLER 22 IN WASHINGTON WITH A 100 JOHNSTON AND 8 SUZUKI FOR 11 K U.S.

THIS BOAT NEEDED A LOT OF WORK AND CLEANUP......BUT IS IN THE WATER NOW.

IT DOES 35 MPH ON THE GPS FULL OUT IN CALM WATER

IT IS THE OLDER DESIGN WITH FLAT BOTTOM ALL THE WAY FORWARD
AND DOES POUND IN ANYTHING OVER A LIGHT CHOP

(THE NEWFIES NEVER HAD THAT PROBLEM , CAUSE THEY JUST ROWED IT

BUT IS COMFORTABLE AT 20 T0 22 MPH

BURNS A WHOLE LOT LESS FUEL THERE TOO,....I'M SURE

I PLAN TO REPLACE MY ENGINE WITH A 90 4 STROKE

FOR YOU.....THE FELLOW BEFORE MENTIONED THE DOLPHIN FIN THAT YOU CAN BOLT ON YOUR ENGINE

Hello all:

Thanks to everyone for all the input re my first-ever posting as a new owner. Re the trim-tabs:

I haven't re-launched the boat yet with the new trim-tabs--but I can report that the Bennett Trim-Tab kit cost CDN$400 and that installation was not difficult at all--little over half a day with no special tools or skills needed, and I'm not that handy with such matters.

Welcome Aboard granitecarver, I have some good pics of your boat for sale at French Creek Boat Sales. Hull shape appears to be the same as Bombero. The cabin top on your CD is raised which is a nice feature. From my experience with trim tabs, they work well for correcting port/starboard list and fore and aft trim on deep V and modified V hulls. I don't think they will make much difference on your ride with the power and hull design you have. As for a dolfin , I took mine off because it made the boat too stiff ( made it pound ). If you live nearby, Lantzville, drop us a line and you can try out my dolfin , if you like. Also, I can help you with the clean up and polishing of your hull. Hope you hear from you. Don't have the book here -- seems like 80-100 hours or so. The light on the speedo reminds you when there are 12 hours to go... so far, so good. I like it. Been running every day (shrimp season open), and it seems to be a real fuel saver.
