This week on Yellowstone Lake (7732’ altitude) our 1998 Honda 4hp kicker would not start, only sputter a couple seconds then shut off. I probably pulled on it 25 times, ugg (do they make an electric starter retro fit for this thing?).

Tuesday, I loaded the motor up and brought it home. On the first pull at home here in Bozeman (5000’ altitude) it fired up and runs like a champ. I had the same gas at home as in YS. Do you all think that the Yellowstone altitude is a factor? Is there any carb adjustment to be made?

Thanks,
Kevin

yes, I'm not a mechanic but any carburated motor is going to need a adjustment to the fuel air mixture at high altitudes. consult your owners manuals.

My 5hp Tohatsu runs fine at all altitudes, including Yellowstone and Mission Bay. There is a difference in power, but with the T as a trolling motor or safety motor power isn't an issue. I don't know why your Honda wouldn't fire up unless there is something in their design that makes them super sensitive to high altitude.

If you have to change Jets, you may be able to pick a compromise jet that will be good at 4000 feet and will still let you run at sea level or 7000 feet.
