For those of you, or more likely your first mates, that may at times find it hard to remember port from starboard and/or who has the right-of -way in a crossing situation I submit the following.

PORT wine is RED and there shouldn't be any LEFT (The other side is the other one)

When you have a crossing situation, look at the running light on the other boat. If it is Green, you have the green light, proceed with caution. If it is Red. Stop, slow down or alter course and let her pass. (Always assume the other boat doesn't have a clue)

There was a great deal of emphasis on Rules of the Road when I got my Captain's license years ago. One rule that can't be over-emphasized: "Big boat EATS little boat." Shocked

Best wishes,
James (was the TX sailor-guy asking about C-Dorys; now back in the frozen northland and still very interested)

And keep in mind folks, during Bouy ten fishing season on the Columbia, all navigation rules go out the window. It's not to early to start gathering all those old tires you'll need to hang off side Smile

If you can't see the color of the other boats running light, then remember that the boat on your RIGHT has the RIGHT OF WAY. And that the boat ahead (if you are overtaking) was there first and has the right of way.

Good point, Larry. Too often boaters don't respect the fact that the overtaking vessel is the burdened vessel.
