New to looking serious at a Ranger 21s. Guy near me has one for sale with (according to him) an 18 hp Yanmar engine. Was wondering if this boat will be underpowered against tides or chop. Looks like newer ones are 30 hp. Anybody out there have any experience with a 21 in heavy weather? Anything that I should know about when kicking the tires on this one? What kind of cruising speed and WOT can I expect? I don't really have a feel for pricing on a used 1997 in excellent conditon with about 750 hours on engine. Thanks in advance Smile

BTW used to sailboats so 6knots does not scare me off.

You might want to post this over on the TugNuts site, look at the lower left corner of the homepage for the link.

Agree that you will get much better answer from Tug nuts. But the older Rangers were not made by the current company. There have been some hull changes, as well as the cabin, and engine. As far as speed, a lot depends on the prop and gearing also. 18 hp is plenty of power in most conditions--none of these are "speed boats". I had an 18 hp engine in a 38 foot sailboat and 6 to 6.5 knots were the usual speeds.

Thanks! Wil do but thought there would be a few Ranger experts here as well. Feel free to answer should any of you folks have info for me.

The older Ranger 21 boat was a displacement hull and limited to 6-7 knots. The newer design will plane or semi plane and go faster. I am not sure when the change was made. I second the other poster that doing research on the Tug Nuts may give you more information.

First of all, if it's a 1997 then I don't think it's an "EC" (Extended Cabin) - that wasn't introduced until the early-mid 2000s.

There was one 21 about that vintage that I was thinking about before I bought my CD22 - it was unfortunately ordered in Oregon Duck colors and the owner was having a heck of a time selling it. And I believe that Willy's Tug (in Texas?) also took a long time to sell. Both were around $20K asking around perhaps the begining of the year (not the best time to sell!) and I assume they both eventually found buyers.

I don't have any experience on the water with the R21 but what would you consider heavy weather? The gunwales are very low on the R21 and I would be cautious in any kind of confused sea state.

If I could own two boats it would be a Ranger and of course the Tomcat. I really like what they have done but I don't have any first-hand on the water time with them.

Good luck with your research.

Les Lampman of EQ Marine brought a R21EC to the Opening Day gathering at Lopez Island a while back (2006?). He liked the boat and thought it to be seaworthy.

You can contact him at EQ Marine, Cornet Bay, Washington for his opinion.

Two or three R21's used to go from Washington to Alaska every summer.
