Reviving this thread to say that I am very grumpy on a Saturday morning!
I decided to move ahead with the Carrier AirV install, and guess what?
Carrier has discontinued all AirV models! Apparently they have gotten out of the RV air business.
So, now I need to take a look at the alternatives.

Yeah, but when it fails, I'll have a hard time getting it fixed. And, the hole in the roof may not be the right size to easily switch to another unit.
I think the Coleman Polar Mach is the way to go now. I'm going to order one up tomorrow.

We just completed the installation of a water cooled
Dometic/Cruiseair STQ8-410A (110V, 8000BTU) Heat Pump.In the cooling mode it is rated at 5.5 FLA (full load amps)
I have posted pictures on Lady KC of this installation on the floor of the port side hanging locker.
I still have to test this a/c operation one day while we are
sitting at the dock.....by operating it off of our inverter
using our 3 - Lifeline AGM (absorbed glass)
Marine House Batteries. Initial indications from the
Xantrex control panel is that under compressor operation, water pump pumping water and set to the highest fan speed,
the panel LED lights show that it is pulling 50--70 DC amps.
My initial thoughts it that it should operate for several hours in this mode while at anchor, but we will need to do some more serious ohms law calculations.

Very nice looking installation. What size are your batteries? You want to be cautious about not pulling them below 12.2 volts. We ran a 5000 BTU unit in an express cruiser off 4 golf cart batteries--and it pulled a little over 50 amps. That gave us about 4 hours of good air conditioning run time. Generally we would cool the boat down and then shut the unit off.
Of course then you have to recharge the batteries--If you run enough the charging system of the outboards will do the job. It looks as if you have Honda 135's--I believe somewhere between 35 and 40 amps charging per engine.
Will this AC unit run on the Honda i 2000 EU generator? _________________ Bob Austin

We are hoping for about 2 hrs of cooling at sundown....
We have 3- Lifeline GPL-27T Batteries tied together.

has some good technical information and calculators.
Yup......we expect each Honda outboard to each put out about 30-40 amps.....so with a little travel each day........things should work out..........but......only sea trials will determine the final outcome.
At our age.........maybe we will look for 30amp shore power.......lol
Our sailboat had a 5KVA diesel generator, so it didn't matter if we were sitting at the Trinadad yacht club.........or on the hook at the Rum Cay....we could turn on the coooool....lol
I have looked at the little light weight Honda gas generators but needing the 30amp plug, I have scratched it off of our list.....

Why do you need a 30 amp plug? Most of us just buy a heavy duty 12 foot extension cord, cut off the 15 amp female plug and put on the female 30 amp marine connector, and use that directly to the Honda--Assuming that the EU2000i will run your unit--which it should easily. If you don't want to spring the $$ for the Honda--there was another one which was about 60% of the price and had good reviews (sorry I don't remember the name).
I suspect that after a few nights aboard you'll go for a generator and 6 gallon fuel tank (that gives several nights running on eco mode). |

You can get a pigtail with a standard plug on one side (plugs into the Honda 2000 watt generator) and a 30 amp connector on the other that you can plug your shore power cord into. I have one. _________________ Alok

Actually every boat should carry one of the pigtails that Alok mentions--also a 20 amp plug for some areas too....
The reason for the shorter cable is that all you need is from the generator on the engine bracket to the plug--and no extra cord to trip over. |

I recently had a 50 ft Marinco shorepower cord stolen, and almost made up my own replacement cord, but finally bought the standard Marinco replacement cord, simply because the plugs on either ends are sealed better than you can do yourself.
Other than that, I make up all my own adapters and pigtails from store bought plugs and heavy 10 gauge rubber covered 3 conductor flexible cable.
You need to know how to wire the plugs, keeping the white, black, and green conductors connected correctly, and understanding single phase 120 volt AC current.
West Marine has a page in their catalogue that shows the correct wire connection orientation of all the common plug types.
Once you get the 120 VAC single phase understood, you can move up to 240 VAC single phase for use around your home and garage (or big boat).
