I installed an airhead toilet in our cabin this spring as there isn't enough room for a septic field. We are the only ones in a group of 9 cabins with indoor plumbing, everybody wants to know where we got it, the women don't care how much, they just want one.
It has worked great, on the airheads there is a sight tube for the liquid so we can keep an eye on it. We were up there every weekend and spent 2 full weeks with kids and grandkid. I "dumped" the solids at the end of July and again at the end of August.
Probably more than I needed to as Airhead said we should get 80 deposits before needing to dump.
We use the biodegradable paper and it seemed to break down OK.
We started out with the coffee filters but found they weren't needed.
A great investment.

OK, so having not looked into this system yet, What is with the coffee filters? Do the take the place of Toilet Paper, or do they go into the Air Head for some other purpose? Curious. Sorry if this is to basic, or earthy

OK, you knew we would weigh in here! We love our Airhead!
The coffee filters go in the bowl and the solids land on them, if your aim is good!
We do put the first wipe toilet paper in the solids tank, then we usually use baby wipes after that and they go in a little garbage container in the head.
TMI, I am sure, but since you all asked... _________________

As Pat stated, the coffee filters are place in the bowl prior to placing any solids. The purpose is to keep the bowl clean. Remember this head is not being flushed. Rather solids are deposited on a stainless "flap" that is later rotated downwards slightly to drop the solids into the tank below. Without the coffee filter, a little bit of the solids will remain on the stainless flap. _________________ Roger on Meant to be |

Hi Roger:
Since we don't have the AirHead, I can't comment on it specifically.
On the Natures Head, there is a trap door, that opens easily with the flip of a lever. We engage the lever before "commencing business". That way the solid matter simply drops into the treatment bin. None of it has contacted the inside of the bowl to this point, but I suppose that would be possible, depending upon the size, or length of the deposit. Should that occur however, it would be pretty easy to moisten some paper (either TP, or paper towel) and clean it up.
If you look at the Sal Salis Vita composting head photos in our album, you can see one with the lid lifted. The lever to accomplish that is on the left side of the unit.
I like to keep things as simple as possible. Adding the coffee filters seems to be an unnecessary step. But, if that makes sense to you, there's no reason you shouldn't do it. _________________ 2007 Cape Cruiser 26 Marinaut |

Based on the discussion here, I have thrown away all of our paper coffee filters. Just can't stand to look at them any more. We now use the fine mesh permanant filter. (In the coffee maker). We have a "normal" head in the boat, whatever that is...

We use Melitta cones for our coffee, so there is never any chance of confusion! Actually however I think the paper helps with the composting process.

Pat- If the paper helps with the composting, why not just read the morning rag when on the head and just dispose of it page by page down the Airhead?
That's about how i feel about the "News" these days, anyway!
This thread is getting outa bounds!

Thanks all for a really good, clear and to the point discussion, for those of us who have something to consider in the future, and knew nothing about the "process" and how these work. Sure like the idea of not dumping into the water.

Thanks for the info. I hauled our boat yesterday for the winter so we'll be replacing the head. Thanks to the information here and after talking with both the guy at Nature's Head and the guy at AIRHead, I'm comfortable that this will be a good move for us. We're gong with the AIRHead since they've been around the longest and I've found more comments on them. I'm sure the Nature's Head works the same. _________________ Jeff and Deb Marcum
