Is a dinghy anchor an often overlooked safety item? Frankly I doubt if many people even consider one. Should I?

Only if you have an engine and no oars to row with. If the engine quits, you are at the mercy of the tide and wind and could end up on another continent in a couple of months.... Rolling Eyes Mr. Green

An anchor is also useful if you want to fish from the dinghy...

They can be handy in absence of an appropriate tree for a shore tie or when fishing as mentioned already. I have a grapple and a sea anchor on our dinghy at all times.

Ditto. I have a small 1 lb collapsible grapple-type for such use w/ about 25' of line attached.
