So, my new motor has reached 100 hours. I am doing the oil change and service myself, but the one element that I am not familiar with is how to inspect the timing belt.

Has anyone done that?

Is there a shop manual/ service manual available online?

Thanks in advance!

Matt

Owners Manuals are available on line, not sure how detailed they are for the Yammys. Generally, the service manuals are much more comprehensive and cost $$. If you are going to do service yourself, they will save you much more than you pay for them. Don't buy the Clymers ones, buy the actual factory manual. You can google it and find it from several sources.

I have used my Suzi one extensively and, even though I think it cost me $90 or something like that, it's saved me much more.

Your local dealer can download the service manual for your motor, and burn it to a CD-ROM for you. Different dealers charge differently for this service.

The manual is not available to consumers online.

If the Yamaha is like the Honda, you can easily see the timing belt when the plastic cover is removed that covers the small flywheel/emergency start wheel, the timing belt and camshaft wheel. It's necessary to remove the cover to check valve clearance anyway, and the belt can be visually inspected as you rotate the engine to check and adjust the valves, which is probably recommended at 100 hours anyway.

Ditto for me Charlie...the factory manual is a definite tool in the tool box!

Thanks for the great feedback. I'll try to get my hands on the shop manual... and I'll try not to break anything important...

I was going to just change my oil and lower unit oil . The Vo-Tec school said bring it in . So they proceeded to give me the schedule maintance(700) checked the valves clearance changed oil filters checked timing belt (changed at 600hrs)and checked all the codes engine compression was at 150 for each cylinder so far so good . the problem came in when they changed out the water pump found a little water intrusion so they changed out the seals about $500 later in parts and labor will be about $60 so not so bad tune -up oil change, new water pump new fuel hoses and complete engine tune up and check up for $560 . So my engine should be good for another yr or so . Plus putting new light on trailer the only down side was it took a few weeks mostly waiting for parts . I will try every thing out next week or so . I guess it pays to work part time for school district .

You are looking cracks and wear.

A few small cracks on the outside of the belt are normal wear but many cracks shows extreme wear. On the inside of the belt inspect the teeth for wear on the edges and for missing or broken teeth. Lastly check the belt is snug and not loose

The current recommendation is to replace the belt every 5 yrs or 1,000 hours

Hello! Send me your email address, and I'll try to send you an electronic copy of the F-90 Manual. I don't know if it will work, as the manual as an attachment may be too long, but it's worth a try.

Let us know how it goes with the self-service. The one thing you can't do at home is download the motor's performance memory and self-diagnostic information. You have to have the program from Yamaha on your computer to do that, and only dealers are set up that way.

Joe,
What year F-90 manual do you have?
I have a 2005 Yamaha 90 and would like a copy as well if it applies.

Andrew-

It's a 2005 (!!!)

I'll need your direct email address, as I don't think we can send attachments through the C-Brats filtered system.

And as I said above, I'm not sure if the file size is within the limits allowed for emails.

As I said before I had my timing belt changed at 600hours and almost 6yrs . I took the boat in to a votec school and looking over the manuels it says 1000 hours for a timing belt the 75-115 timing belts should be the same It's a $60-70 part depending where you buy it .

Yup, at 100 hours, you're just getting loosened up and broken in, although the rings and valves have seated and she should be running and spinning like a top!
